The Lansky Diamond Deluxe sharpening system and the Wicked Edge Precision Sharpener. Both very complete systems with which you can easily sharpen your knives. What are the differences? Read on! On both systems we have sharpened a No. 8. so we can make a good comparison.

How to sharpen with the system

There are two ways to sharpen with the Lansky system:

  • Place the knife in a vice
  • Hold the clamp in your hand
Angle it can be set toFour angles: 17, 20, 25 and 30 degree angles
Maximum reach of the stones40 centimeters, 20 centimeters on each side
Choice of materialDiamond stones, Synthetic grips, clamp
Placement of the knifePlacement is a bit difficult when you want to work keeping it in your hand. The knife also gives a little when being held in a clamp.
Quickest sharpening systemFor each side of the blade it took us about 10-15 minutes. In just about half an hour we were able to sharpen the knife. Because the knife is placed sideways it is easy to slip out with the sharpening stones.
ResultsA very sharp knife. It easily withstood the paper test. With even finer guide rods the knife will probably become razor sharp.

How to sharpen with the system

There are also two ways to use the Wicked Edge:

  • Place the clamp on a flat surface.
  • Place the clamp on a sturdy stand.

Placement of the knifeUsing the depth key is incredibly simple. Turn both screws and the knife is steady as a rock.
Quickest sharpening systemTo sharpen the blade on both sides took us about 15 minutes. The knife was tightly secured in the clamp. Because sharpening occurs with an up-and-down motion there is no risk of the stones slipping out.
ResultsA very sharp knife. It easily withstood the paper test. It easily withstood the paper test. When you continue with a finer rod and finish with Leather Strops your blade will become razor sharp.

Conclusion: usability is king

Both the Lansky Diamond Deluxe Sharpening system as the Wicked Edge sharpening system are easy to use, even for beginners. The manuals help understanding the systems better. One of the most important differences is that the Wicked Edge is more stable. The knife is held steadily by the clamp and the guide rods stay put better. The Lansky-systeem gives a little which sometimes causes you to slip out with the sharpening stones.

The result with both systems is excellent. If you are looking for a more user-friendly system you should go for the Wicked Edge Precision Sharpener.
