Manual & pull through knife sharpeners: for razor-sharp knives, quickly and easily

Knife sharpeners are useful little devices with ceramic wheels that sharpen your knife. The knife sharpeners will quickly and easily leave you with sharp knives. In addition to sharpening your kitchen knives you can also use this tool to sharpen your table knives.

However, when you use a knife sharpener your results won’t be as good as when you use a sharpening steel or stone. If you are looking for razor-sharp knives we recommend using a sharpening stone.

Easily sharpen your knives with a knife sharpener.

The knife sharpeners with wheels, made by, for instance, Wüsthof or Zwilling, are easy to use. It is not necessary to pay attention to the angle, the wheels have been adjusted as such that you will always end up with sharp blades.

The Vulkanus systems do not work with wheels because these knife sharpeners contain a standard mould in which the knives are sharpened. The Vulkanus systems work incredibly fast, but relatively little material is removed from your knife.

When you use a knife sharpener that works with multiple stages or steps, you need to follow all steps to sharpen your knife. Always start on the left side and work your way to the right (when you are holding the knife in your right hand). Usually pulling it through 15 times will suffice, however, the results differ tremendously per system. For more information check out our knife sharpeners test.

Water sharpeners

A water sharpener (made by, for instance, Minosharp) first needs to be filled with a little layer of water before you start sharpening. In doing so you imitate the function and effect of a water stone. When you use a water sharpener the entire process will only take you minutes. However, aside from this difference the water sharpener functions the same as other sharpeners.

Use each sharpener with care and slowly pull your knives through. As such you will not only make sure the knife sharpener will keep working, but it will also ensure that the wheels will not be damaged.
