Small enough to slip in your pocket but powerful enough For most uses this is an optically excellent and robust monocular. I can’t speak too highly of it.

I was looking for a means of examining insects in the field and looking in more detail at stamp displays where the exhibits are securely held behind glass frames when I came across the Leica Monovid. It has the advantage of being small enough to fit in the pocket and can also be carried on a belt in its case - an additional feature is that it comes with a close up lens which is securely stored on the case and can be attached for close up viewing. I have found that it is an excellent way of studying the wild life which comes into my garden and seeing details of the actors expressions in the theatre. It is of excellent quality and while cheaper models are available from other manufacturers they lack the overall quality of this one.

I wanted a lightweight optic that I can carry every day. This fits the job perfectly. I am astonished at the image quality, brilliance and field of view given from this small monocular which compares very well with all my binoculars some of which are premium (but not the latest) models. I find it easy to use, holding it in two hands for a steady image, equal to using 8x40 binoculars. While a binocular view is better than using a single eye the advantage of it being small enough to have with me every day is fantastic. I don't think any case will stand carrying around for many years without the belt loop failing and the although it is a quality item this would apply to the supplied leather case. I have bought a nylon material Ansmann torch holster (for their Agent 1-3) which is proving a useful field case. It needs a 2 cm block of polyethylene foam packaging (the stuff used in the monovid's sales box) to prevent the monocular going in too far (making it difficult to retrieve quickly) and I think of this holster as a consumable item. I do not carry the additional close up lens and am doubtful about it's value. In the field you have to hold yourself 30cm from the object you wish to view which involves getting into an uncomfortable contorted position, especially as it has a very shallow depth of field. It is easier to use if you put an object on a table and rest your elbows on the table to make a steady stand.

A bright and clear image, with the build quality you expect from Leica.

Exceeds expectations First outing was the British Grand Prix and it was as useful as the binoculars that I usually take but without the bulk and weight. Second outing was a camping weekend where I used it for some opportunistic bird watching with good results and using the close up lens, examining the details of a large snail in exquisite detail. Very impressed with the brightness from a 20mm lens and the image quality is very impressive. It is becoming an e.d.p. item for me. It is so light, compact and always at the ready. Looking forward to taking it to Greece.
