The Southern Grind Bad Monkey is a large and solid pocket knife. When you hold a Bad Monkey, you immediately feel how well the ergonomics are though out. The finger groove is in exactly the right place, as is the jimping (grip) on the back of the blade. For heavier tasks you will still have solid grip. The blade length of 9.9 cm really begs for you to use this knife for heavy duty!
The blade is made of Sandvik 14C28N-steel. A stainless steel type which is delivered sharp as a razor and easy to keep that way. In terms of finish they have chosen for a black Cerakote-coating. This is a ceramic coating very resistant to wear and tear, originally developed for coating of firearms. Cerakote protects against rust and different chemical agents. The ceramic material also keeps products from sticking to the blade.
The Modified Tanto blade shape is very special. On the tip it has an additional edge, which makes the tip even stronger than a regular Tanto. It also looks awesome!
Both sides of the blade has a thumb stud and opening it with one hand goes smoothly. A different way with which you can open the blade is by the Emerson Wave, which is on the back. When you pull the knife out of your pocket the Wave opens the knife automatically.
The grip parts are made of carbon fiber and a light texture on the surface provides some extra grip. Between the grip parts there are titanium liners which make it sturdy, stainless and lightweight. The liners also hold the liner-lock and keeps the blade firmly in place in opened position. Characteristic of Southern Grind knives is the early lock-up. This means that any wear and tear has no influence on the workings of the lock.
Another Southern Grind characteristic is the pocket clip. They use a short but wide pocket clip. Unconventional, but very functional. The knife falls discretely inside your pocket. It also doesn’t damage your pocket as much as a different pocket clip would.
The Southern Grind Bad Monkey is a real fresh breeze in the world of pocket knives. The excellent finish, fine ergonomics and good materials are really appealing. An excellent example of an American manufacturer pushing the boundaries!
