## Big advantage! 

A major advantage of the liner lock is the security it provides during use. The blade remains firmly in place, minimising the risk of unintentional folding. This system offers considerable ease of use, as it is easy to operate with one hand. 

 

## Small disadvantage 

When unlocking the blade, your finger will be quite close to the sharp edge of your knife. This happens because the lockbar must be operated with the finger to close the blade. Although a detent ball provides some resistance before the blade closes completely, the user must be careful to avoid injury. Despite this small drawback, the liner lock remains popular because of its excellent balance between security, ease of operation and cost.

## How to choose the best bushcraft axe

When you're choosing a bushcraft axe, it makes sense to consider the tasks you're planning to carry out most often. Will you be felling trees for a shelter? Or splitting wood for the campfire in cold climates? You're probably looking for an axe with a longer handle, think 60 cm or longer. This will increase the power of impact, and a slightly heavier axe head will contribute to this as well. 1075 Carbon, like any type of steel, needs to maintained to make the most of it. For 1075 carbon steel maintenance is key to prevent rust and corrosion. Properly clean and dry the blade after use. Especially after use in wet or humid environments. Afterwards add [a thin layer of protective oil](kato://category/ballistolbrandpage) to the blade to decrease the risk of corrosion. Also make sure you store your knife in a sheath that won't absorb moisture. Leather, for instance, can absorb and retain moisture which can cause your blade to rust.

The term HID stands for High Intensity Discharge, or gas emission in plain English. It is a lighting technology where the traditional lamp with the wire in the reflector is replaced with a thick-walled quartz glass tube filled with noble gas and metal salts. Furthermore, a ballast or high tension transformer is used in a HID lamp which provides the necessary arc voltage at the correct voltage. This generates a flame arc between two electrodes in the glass tube, which temporarily makes the metal salts in the noble gas evaporate. As a result, they radiate light. Spotlight Ballistol: a miracle cure for maintenance

We hear it quite often: 'I have owned this knife for a while now and it won't run as smoothly as it did before'. Or: 'I just got this knife and it is so stiff'. Many people often immediately use oil to grease the hinge. Yes that could sometimes solve the problem. But what we see is that in many cases there is something else that is causing the problem: the detent ball. We will tell you what that is, what it does and how you can make sure it won't work against you.

## What is a detent ball?

The detent ball is a small ball bearing made from steel or ceramics. In knives with a framelock or linerlock a detent ball will make sure that when closed the knife won't accidentally open. The ball is pushed into the lockbar, and in the blade you can find a small hole. Because the detent ball falls into the hole when the knife is closed, the knife will stay closed. In addition to linerlocks and framelocks there are also other mechanisms that use a similar ball (think of a compression lock) but nine out of ten times it concerns a liner or framelock.

What is a detent ball and how do you maintain it?

Fixed knives often come with a leather sheath. But how do you make sure that the leather stays in great shape? How do you make sure it won’t dry out and tear?

## Better safe than sorry

Step one in taking care of your leather sheaths is making sure the leather does not wear out excessively. So better be safe than sorry, as we say. It is, for instance, not a good idea to scrape a leather sheath alongside a concrete or stone wall. After all, it will quickly wear out the leather. Also something you shouldn’t do: leaving your leather sheath out in the sun for a long period of time. The sun will ‘bake’ the leather dry, and the result is that you have to say goodbye to the suppleness of the leather. Conversely the same applies: long-term exposure to water is also not recommended. So if you start with preventing any damages you won’t have as much to fix in the long run.

## How does the leather sheath remain supple?

With the [Dovo leather balm](kato://product/DO515171) you will keep your leather sheath nice and supple. You apply it with a clean cloth and let it set for fifteen minutes. Afterwards you get another clean cloth to rub the leather. This removes the excess cream and will make the leather nice and shiny.

You can do the same with [Ballistol](kato://content/migrated_pageid_256). This is a maintenance oil that will nicely be absorbed by the leather. It will make the leather nice and supple and prevents tears.

Practical about Ballistol is that you can also rub it on the blade to prevent rust. In addition, Ballistol will help you remove any remaining tape from, for instance, steel. Although Ballistol doesn’t mention it on the package we know that Ballistol is food safe. This means that you can even use it on your kitchen knives.

How do you maintain a leather sheath?

## Keep the blade clean


Your saw will stay sharp and beautiful for longer if you keep it clean. Due to sawdust and resin between the teeth of your saw blade, the cutting performance of your saw deteriorates. You need to make sure the blade stays clean, otherwise it will lose its function. Olive oil is an effective, environmentally-friendly way to clean the blade. Resin dissolves in olive oil and will therefore disappear if you use it to clean the saw blade. Another advantage: chances are you already have it at home! You can also use detergents, but these will affect the material of the handle and the blade.

For cleaning the saw blade, oven cleaner is also a great option. This is because oven cleaner has a high 'crawling capacity', which ensures that resin, sawdust and other debris are easily detached from the saw blade. You can then use a clean, dry cloth to remove the oven cleaner.


## Store it in a dry place


Take good care of your saw, even if you don't use it. Properly dry it, put it in the holster and store it somewhere dry. Moisture can cause rust. Quite a shame really. Apply petroleum jelly or a maintenance oil such as Ballistol to the dry saw blade. Greasing prevents the saw blade from rusting. Don't have a holster? Then store the saw hanging up. Never just put it away in a drawer or on the workbench. Hanging a saw is safer and keeps your saw straight and sharp. 

In the unlikely event that the saw blade has started to rust, there are several ways to fix it. For example, the saw blade can be cleaned with vinegar. Leave the saw blade in vinegar for 24 hours. The vinegar reacts with rust and causes it to detach from the metal. After these 24 hours in the vinegar, easily brush off the rust with a steel brush or some aluminium foil. An old cloth soaked in vinegar can be enough to remove light rust stains!

Don't have the patience for those 24 hours? Then opt for baking soda. Mix this with water until it is thick enough to spread on the tools. Wait 2-3 hours before taking it off again. This can easily be done with a piece of cloth or an old toothbrush.



## Sharpening your saw


To sharpen a saw blade, use a small file, diamond sharpening steel or whetstone. You need a sharpening tool that allows you to sharpen each individual tooth of the saw. For sharpening your saw, we recommend the following products:

After using your shears you need to remove any left-over plant juice. With a dry piece of cloth you can remove almost anything from your shears. Still not clean enough? Use warm water and a little bit of detergent to be able to remove the dirt from the blades with a brush. Properly rinse of any access detergent with clean water and properly dry the blades. This is key to prevent any rust.


## Keeping it flexible


After cleaning the shears we recommend adding a drop of oil to the hinging parts of the spring. You do so to prevent rust and to make sure the blades don’t get stuck. You could, for instance, use Ballistol maintenance oil. ## Which oil do you use for wooden handles?


There are different types of oil that can be used to treat wooden handles. Each oil has its own properties and will respond differently to different types of wood. In addition, there are different types of oil that can be used for multiple purposes. As a result you can do different things with one bottle.


### Ballistol


In our range [Ballistol](kato://content/migrated_pageid_256) is one of the most popular types of oil. Originally developed as oil for weapons but today praised because of its versatility. It is an oil that revives dry wood. Ballistol can be used on all types of wood, with the exception of handles that have been painted. Ballistol, however, has a quite particular smell: like a pine forest in a jar. Some hate it, some love it and wish they could use it as eau de cologne.


Practical about Ballistol is that you can also rub it on your blade to prevent rust. In addition, Ballistol will help you remove any remaining tape from steel. Furthermore, Ballistol is used to keep leather flexible which makes it a great product to keep your sheath in great shape. Although Ballistol doesn’t mention it on the package we know that [Ballistol](kato://content/migrated_pageid_256) is food safe. So you can even use it on your kitchen knives.


### Eden Essentials mineral oil for wooden cutting boards


[Eden Essentials cutting board oil](kato://product/EQE003) is a thick paraffinic oil. It slightly seals the wood and takes care of a beautiful glossy finish. As the name might already suggest it is also great to treat wooden cutting boards.


### Robert Herder maintenance oil for wooden handles


The [Robert Herder maintenance oil for wooden handles](kato://product/RK910002000) is also a good option. The macadamia oil is great for the wood and the light fragrance of lemons definitely makes the knife smell amazing.


### Danish oil


Amongst woodworkers the effect of Danish oil has been known for years. This mixture based on Tung oil deeply penetrates the wood. After applying and letting it dry it is key to rub the handle with a dry piece of cloth. That is how the natural pattern of the wood is best featured, but more importantly, you need to wipe of the excess Danish oil. If you allow the surface to dry a type of lacquer layer will form and that is something you want to avoid. The advantage of Danish oil is that after applying it the wood won’t dry out as quickly.


### Linseed oil


Another remedy from a bygone age. It works the same as with Danish oil. Apply a thin coat, let it set and rub it afterwards to remove access oil. It is important to not let it dry on the blade! After all, it could get stuck on top like a type of lacquer, and that is not something you want.


## Why not use olive oil?


Like with some cutting boards it is sometimes said that you can also take care of a wooden handle with olive oil. And in the short term that is true. The downside of olive oil, however, is that after a while it could get rancid. It will start to smell slightly stale and that is, of course, not preferred.

We've made a list of things you can use to clean your Swiss army knife. Chances are, you'll already have most of them!

## Before you get started

This How-To guide is written for Swiss pocket knives with plastic or aluminium handle scales in mind. Is your pocket knife made from wood? Make sure you don't get it too wet, as this would negatively affect the handle. Also avoid abrasive cleaners or steel brushes, as these can damage the surface of the blade.

### Step 1: open the tools

Let's get started! A Swiss army knife should not be taken apart. Instead, you open all the blades and tools so you can reach every nook and cranny. Be careful not to cut yourself on the sharp tools. Tip: save opening the blade and saw for last.

### Step 2: rinsing your Swiss army knife in the sink

First of all, you want to give the pocket knife a good rinse. This will get rid of most of the dirt already. Hold all tools under the tap and rinse them well with lukewarm water. If the water is too hot you can hurt yourself and make the knife too hot to hold. Make sure to rinse the inside of the pocket knife too. If there is any dirt stuck in a corner, use a toothpick to pick it out.

Is your Swiss pocket knife not that dirty? A wet cotton swab works wonders when cleaning the inside of the pocket knife.

### Step 3: cleaning with soap and a brush

Apply a little soap to the brush and gently scrub all parts of the blade, including the hinge points. A toothbrush is ideal for this job as the bristles are small enough to get into the crevices. The soap efficiently removes grease that you can't easily see with the naked eye.

### Step 4: rinse and dry

Rinse the knife again under warm water to remove all soap residue. Dry the knife thoroughly with a clean cloth. Make sure all parts are dry, especially the hinge points, to prevent rust. You can also use a hairdryer to make sure everything is really dry. As most Swiss pocket knives are made of stainless steel, it shouldn't be a problem if a little moisture remains.

### Step 5: add oil

Apply a small amount of oil to the hinge points of the Swiss army knife. This helps keep the tools moving smoothly. ### Step 6: close the tools and you're done!

When purchasing a kitchen knife you can choose from an infinite amount of handle materials. From all types of wood to plastic and from micarta to POM. Each with their own advantages and disadvantages.


Japanese knives are often enhanced with a wooden handle. And wood requires some maintenance. A wooden handle is often treated with oil or wax as it is made. If you use a knife for a couple of months it is never a bad idea to add a couple drops of oil to a wooden handle.
