### Ferrum Forge Knife Works: the story of two brothers 

Ferrum Forge Knife Works is the brainchild of Elliot and Chris, two brothers from the United States. The story started in 2009, in Elliot's garage. His study of archaeometallurgy (the study of the development of metallurgy in antiquity) led him to the following realisation: 'If man has been making knives for centuries. Why can't I do the same?' Four years later and Elliot is a fully-fledged knife maker who records his entire process and publishes it on YouTube. This brought him much acclaim and the demand for his work increased. When the work became too much to handle for one person his brother Chris entered the stage. First as Elliot's apprentice and weekend helper, and from 2014 as a full-time partner. 

### Limited Runs 

In the years 2013 to 2017 the two brothers decided to focus solely on Limited Run knives. There are only 200 pieces of each run. Limited Run knives are made with CNC machines after which the brothers modified them with unique, experimental finishes. ## How good is D2 steel?

When it comes down to a steel type 'good' is, of course, relative. A steel type is as good as it adheres to the demands of the user. So how does that pan out for D2? The high carbon and chromium content contributes to the excellent wear and tear resistance. This means the edge retains its sharpness for a long time. Even with longterm use. So perfect for tasks that require you to use a sharp knife for a long time. Despite the fact that D2 is not completely corrosion resistant, the addition of chromium ensures it is less likely to rust. Especially when you compare it to common carbon steel. But don't be mistaken! This steel type still needs to be maintained properly to prevent rust.

## What are the disadvantages of D2 steel?

With so many steel types out there it can be quite the task to determine which is the best choice for you. That is why it is also important to keep the 'disadvantages' of D2 in mind. D2 is tougher than many stainless steels. It is, however, not as tough as some non-stainless tool steels. This means it is more sensitive to chipping. Despite the fact that D2 steel is sometimes also referred to as semi-stainless because of the chromium content, it is less corrosion resistant than real stainless steel. This means you still need to maintain it properly to prevent corrosion. Especially after being used in humid environments or when the blade has been in contact with salt or acidic substances.

## Which is better? D2 compared to...?

Many types of steel are used to produce pocket knives. But which steel type is better? First and foremost, this depends on what you are looking for. However, if you do want to make a comparison: D2 can be compared to S30V steel, 154CM/CPM 154 steel and CPM D2.

### CPM S30V

CPM S30V is a top-quality stainless steel with better corrosion resistance. [S30V steel](kato://category/pocketknifesteeltypecpms30v), however, is easier to sharpen than D2.

Both [154CM](kato://category/pocketknifesteeltype154cm) and CPM154 are stainless steel alternatives that are easier to sharpen than D2\. Both are also more corrosion resistant. The only difference here can be found when you look at the wear resistance. D2 steel is more resistant to wear and tear.

### CPM-D2

CPM-D2 is the powder metallurgical version of D2\. In terms of properties, it's a little more balanced than D2, and it retains its sharpness better. Like D2, it does require more maintenance due to the lower chromium content.

## D2 fans: which brands use D2 steel?

You have never been more sure: you are looking for a pocket knife with a blade made from D2 steel. But which brand uses this type of steel for their pocket knives and appeals to you most? ## D2 maintenance

## Who is SENCUT?

[SENCUT](kato://category/sencutbrand) is a new brand and a part of knife manufacturer WE Knife. After the success of Civivi, WE Knife decided to expand its range. They did an amazing job with SENCUT! WE Knife focuses on the high-end market and Civivi was a massive hit for the mid-range segment. As such it is not that surprising that SENCUS focuses on the budget market.

## What is SENCUT known for?

The SENCUT knives have an amazing price-quality ratio and are made to be used. For the steel the emphasis is placed on user-friendliness, think of steel that can handle its own and is also easy to sharpen. In terms of handle materials SENCUT opted for lightweight materials that, even after long-term use, still feel great in hand.

## Where does SENCUT come from?

Like WE Knife and Civivi, SENCUT is produced in the knife capital of China, Yangjiang City. The production takes place in the same factory as the above-mentioned brands. Despite the lower prices, the production quality is outstanding.

## At the intersection of survival, trekking and camping 
To understand the concept of bushcrafting, it's nice to consider other, similar, outdoor activities. Take survival, for example: survival is about surviving in the great outdoors using only the bare necessities. The goal of this outdoor activity? To return to civilization alive and well, as quickly as possible.

Then there's trekking. Trekking is about long-distance hiking. You move, you look, you appreciate. You sleep wherever you end up, pack up your light camping gear in the morning and keep moving.

And then there’s classic camping, the kind we all know: staying at a campsite with electricity, hot showers, a fridge and a comfortable chair in front of your tent or caravan. It’s being outdoors with a touch of home comfort. The campsite offers structure, convenience, and a bit of luxury: ideal for those who want to enjoy nature without having to sacrifice comfort.

Bushcraft strikes the perfect balance between these activities. You head into nature to stay there for a while, not just to survive, but also to thrive and be comfortable. You turn the forest into your temporary living room. It’s all about tranquility, self-sufficiency and truly getting to know your surroundings. Good bushcraft equipment supports you in this, such as a sturdy bushcraft backpack, durable clothing and reliable tools.

Unlike the survivalist, who focuses on getting enough calories from foraged food, the trekker, who watches every gram of weight, or the camper, who seeks convenience, bushcraft is all about immersion in nature. Comfort is key. Imagine a breakfast of eggs and bacon cooked in a cast-iron skillet, coffee brewed in a French press, served in a hand-carved kuksa – all enjoyed by a campfire on the shore of a vast lake. No rush, no next stage to reach; just pure enjoyment of the moment and your place in nature. It’s at times like these that you realise how important the right bushcraft essentials are.

What is bushcraft?

## Origins (before WWII) 
The origins of KA-BAR knives date back to the early 20th century. Between the 1890s and 1910s, various American companies were already producing hunting and utility knives, but there was no standard military service knife yet. At the time, U.S. troops primarily used bayonets or civilian knives for fieldwork and everyday tasks. 
The KA-BAR brand name emerged in the early 20th century, derived from an anecdote in which a hunter killed a bear with a knife and described it in a poorly written letter as 'K a bar' (kill a bear). By the 1920s, this became the official brand name of the company.

In addition to a substantial amount of knives, bins and kitchen tools there are also various Eden flashlights. Developed and extensively tested by the people at Knivesandtools for, as its target group, bobbies and security personnel. However, in time ‘civilian editions’ were added to the range as well, perfect for everyday use. When Knivesandtools asked me to test my first Eden light ever, I was definitely curious! In this review I will share my personal feelings about one of the latest models, the [Eden TDL25R Plus](kato://product/EQFTDL25R). Spoiler alert: I never held a flashlight that can so easily be adjusted to a user’s wishes! But more about that later, with, of course photographs of the light itself and its beam.
