What makes a Wicked Edge sharpening system so special?

Sharpening on a Wicked Edge: a completely different story. You cannot compare it with a sharpening steel or electric sharpener. A sharpening system by Lansky or Spyderco comes a little bit closer. But sharpening on a Wicked Edge is even easier and faster. We would like you to experience that so we have made a step-by-step plan. With that plan your knife will get the Wicked sharp Edge promised by Wicked Edge!

Step 1: clamp your knife in the Wicked Edge

The Wicked Edge sharpening system is delivered with a ruler and a so-called depth-key. These tools ensure that your knife is always clamped in exactly the same place. You can choose from two vertical positions when clamping the knife. In order to make sure that the degree indication of the sharpening angle is exactly correct, the knife has to protrude approximately 5/8 inch (15.8 mm) above the clamp. You can use the supplied conductor when you have a very long or flexible knife. That conductor takes care of a larger stability when clamping the knife. You want to be able to check with which angle you are about to sharpen? The separately deliverable digital goniometer might be something for you! The goniometer is standard delivered with the Wicked Edge Pro Pack 2.

Step 2: the right sharpening angle for your knife

You can find out the sharpening angle of a knife in different ways. This information is often already given by the supplier of the knife. If this is not the case you can pretty easily determine the sharpening angle yourself. Place a line with a permanent marker on the folding of the blade and carefully sharpen a piece with the possible sharpening angle. The disappeared part of the line shows if the angle is correct or possibly has to be larger or smaller.

Step 3: mount the guiding rods

With the Wicked Edge you mount the guiding rods for the sharpening stones depending on the sharpening angle. So, determine your sharpening angle and then place the guiding rods in the correct position. The Wicked Edge shows a clear indication so that you can easily position the rods. Then slide the sharpening stones over the guiding rods. When your knife is really blunt you start with a coarse sharpening stone, for example a grain 100. This repairs the fold of the knife. Use the finer stones (for example grain 1000) if you just want to give your knife a touch-up.

Step 4: sharpening on the Wicked Edge

Sharpening on a Wicked Edge is pretty straight forward. Start with the coarsest stone necessary for your needs. Are you not sure with which one to start? Have a look at our information about sharpening stones first and you can get started! Start with one side of the knife. Start at the back with the sharpening stone in the lowest position possible. Exert slight pressure and move the stone towards the front of the knife. While moving the stone forward you also bring it upward. Stop when you have reached the tip of the knife. Work calmly and slowly, speed requires a bit more experience and will come in time.

So, very easy to do! A Wicked Edge is delivered with stones that can be used on both sides. It depends on the set which stones are supplied. This varies from grain 100/200 to grain 800 /1000. Because of the double stones you can sharpen the knife on both sides at the same time as soon as you have mastered the technique. You always sharpen dry on the Wicked Edge. Also always work from the back of your knife towards the front.

Step 5: the finishing

Is your knife back to its old sharpness? You might choose to do some last polishing work. The Wicked Edge, with the exception of the Precision Sharpener, is delivered with leather belts (the Leather Strops) which are extremely suitable for this purpose. Apply a bit of diamond-paste (included) to the strops and polish your blade with them. It is important to handle the leather strops with care. You can almost not damage the leather if you only move it upwards. Clean your knife thoroughly beforehand and no metal parts will end up in the leather.

Tips:

  • Always pay close attention to what is happening with your knife. Ensure yourself that metal is removed where you do want it and not where you specifically do not want it. Is this still the case? Take another look at your sharpening angle. You can do this by means of the permanent marker test mentioned in step 2.
  • Wipe your knife clean when you change the sharpening stone. This prevents metal parts of the knife from getting stuck between your fine sharpening stones.
  • Do not be discouraged if your knife is not immediately as sharp as hoped for. The Wicked Edge works with diamond stones which work very aggressively in the beginning. After 5 to 10 knives they will work optimally.
  • Use a practice knife in the beginning. In that way you can test and try a few things without having to be afraid of problems.

A Wicked sharp Edge really is for everyone!

Hopefully our explanation has convinced you: the Wicked Edge makes great sharpening possible for everyone!
