The Gerber Freescape Hatchet 17.5” is a stunning outdoor axe. Compact enough to take with you on a hike, large enough to cleave reasonably-sized pieces of wood. However, when you need to spend some time in your garden the Freescape Hatchet will also be the perfect companion.
In terms of construction Gerber decided to go with a modern and unconventional design. Instead of a wooden handle in a steel axe head the handle made from FiberComp closes around the head. As such the head can never separate from the handle. FiberComp is a fibre-glass reinforced type of plastic. Incredibly strong and very light in terms of weight. At the same time the handle absorbs a lot of the vibrations that are released when you are chopping.
The steel on the axe head is, up to the cutting edge, tempered up to 55HRC. Hard enough to retain its sharpness, tough enough to not suddenly break. The axe head has been enhanced with a PTFE-coating, similar to the non-stick coating in a frying pan. As such the axe head can easily be separated from the wood. This coating also protects the steel against rust.
The Gerber Freescape Hatchet 17.5” comes with a large plastic sheath perfect for in your garage or shed, but a little bulky for on the road. For that reason Gerber has included a second, more compact, sheath which only covers the cutting edge and can be attached to the handle with an elastic band. Perfect when you are carrying the axe in your backpack.
This axe is produced in Finland in the Fiskars factory. Both brands are, after all, part of the same company.
