The Grailer 1 is a stunning pocket knife and the first production pocket knife designed by the Dutch knife maker Dirk de Wit. A high-end pocket knife, made from the best materials by one of the best producers in the world.
The Grailer 1 is based on the most recent custom knife made by Dirk de Wit which he started to develop in 2002. Throughout the years Dirk constantly made changes to the design and tested it. He also spend a lot of time listening to the feedback of those who used the knife, after which he made some more changes and tried out a new technique. Dirk’s design literally became production-ready on the drawing board.
We decided we wanted the best manufacturer to produce this knife for us and we are very fortunate to announce that we did in fact get the best: LionSteel in Maniago, Italy. A company which has been winning award after award on the Blade Show for years. The best pocket knife manufacturer in Europe, perhaps even in the world. The only producer Dirk trusted enough with his design.
The results are amazing, if we may say so ourselves. The Grailer 1 is the perfect example of Dutch Design and Italian ingenuity. In both form and function, the Grailer 1 is exceptional. Compact and light enough to carry around, sturdy enough to handle most heavy tasks. An EDC knife with a stylish look.
Grailer 1: the technical aspects
Dirk’s custom knives might look simple, they, however, contain a lot of technical ingenuity. Dirk has been working with his hands for years, holding pieces of paper against his conservatory window, never using a computer. The challenge, however, when creating the Grailer 1, was translating Dirks method into a pocket knife that could be produced by a modern manufacturer.
The blade on the Grailer 1 is made from Böhler M390 Steel. It is Dirk’s favourite type of steel and the only one he uses for his custom knives. M390 comes from Austria and is known for how it retains its sharpness and for its corrosion resistance. In this blade you can clearly find Dirk’s signature in the round plunge line where the blade becomes thinner, just before the handle.
The pocket clip
As a left-handed man himself, Dirk is allergic to pocket clips that cannot be turned into either a left or right-handed clip. For this reason alone the clip on the Grailer 1 can be (re)moved without leaving visible screw holes. Even better: you can replace the clip with the included screw to get a completely ‘clean-looking’ knife. This solution in itself is very rare for a production knife.
The pivot is made from hardened steel which reduces the wear and tear and ensures that the blade runs smoothly. The diameter of the pivot-axle and the screw heads is extra-large which provides you with even more stability. There was no need to use Loctite during the assembly of the pivot because on the other side of the pivot you can find a contra-screw which holds the hinge screw. A rare construction for a production knife. We, of course, made sure that the pivot cannot turn itself relative to the handle.
The stop-pin is also made from hardened steel to make sure that the lock remains perfect for years. This stop-pin is more than simply a screw with a small tube around it: it is an essential part of the construction and gives the handle additional stability.
The Grailer 1 handles are made from titanium. The edges have a wonderful wavy finish. A typical Italian touch added by LionSteel. On the inside both titanium handles have large milled out chambers which makes the Grailer 1 relatively light in weight which increases the balance of the knife.
The thumb studs
You can easily open the knife with one hand using the double thumb studs. Would you rather like to open the knife using two hands? Simply remove the thumb studs with the included tool.
When opened, the Grailer 1 is locked with the solid frame lock. A strong lock which uses the hand of the user to make the blocking even stronger. Typical for this Dirk-design is the large ‘collar’ around the pivot which slightly falls over the lockbar of the frame lock. As such you will never be able to disrupt the lock itself, keeping it in perfect condition for years.
About designer Dirk de Wit
Ever since 1991 Dirk de Wit has been designing knives you can only dream of. Smooth lines, curves, attention paid to aesthetics and the use of the best materials: all characteristic for Dirk. The quality of his knives is recognized throughout the world. Coveted, but very scarce. With the Grailer 1 everyone will have the chance to own this perfect example of amazing Dutch Design. Dirk’s Dutch Design that is.
At Knivesandtools we have been in love with Dirk’s work for years. He visited us often and together we talked about many knives. This is how we came up with the idea of making a knife together. It was how the Grailer 1 saw the light of day: grail knives we believe, are amazing, and, as an added bonus, are available to a larger audience.
