The Ochsenkopf aluminium wedge 42-0550 is a 550 grams forged wedge perfect for felling and splitting wood. The sharp curved grooves in the front and the double length grooves at the back prevent a kickback. In addition, the wedge can also be used with frozen wood.

 Aluminium wedges are extremely light and very stable. Aluminium prevents a dangerous rejection of a chainsaw when touching the wedge. When using an aluminium wedge there is no risk of splintering.

Da man Spaltkeile nur nimmt, wenn's wirklich ans Grobe geht, müssen sie einiges aushalten. Wer keinen Gummihammer hat, wird wahrscheinlich mit dem Vorschlaghammer oder dem Spalthammer ans Werk gehen. Werkstoffbedingt (Alu) passiert dem Hammer nichts, der Spaltkeil verformt sich aber bei zähem oder hartem Holz doch recht schnell und muss dann nachgefeilt werden, wenn ein Grat entsteht. 
Sonst ist aber nichts zu beanstanden; der Keil greift gut im Holz und springt nicht, wie selbstgemachte Holzkeile, wieder heraus. Die Schneide ist scharf genug zum Ansetzen, im Idealfall schlägt man aber mit einer Spaltaxt einen Schlitz vor, in den der Spaltkeil dann gesetzt werden kann. 
Zu beachten ist vielleicht noch, dass dieser Keil für eher kleinere bzw. kürzere Stämme am besten funktioniert; hat man es mit hartem Holz und längeren Stammabschnitten zu tun (etwa 1 m), dann braucht man vermutlich noch den (ebenfalls von Ochsenkopf erhältlichen) größeren Keil (sofern lieferbar). Abwechselnd bzw. im Zusammenspiel eingesetzt, rückt man dann den größten Stämmen zu Leibe – und hat bald handliches Brennholz.
