The Schrade Frontier Fixed Blade SCHF36 is a solid survival knife, for a good price. The blade is made from the well-known and popular 1095 carbon steel. This type of steel is used by many major knife brands. The fact that Schrade can offer a comparable knife at such an attractive price is seriously impressive. Especially when you consider that it also comes with a sharpening stone and a firesteel. A complete survival knife, for a very good price.
1095 carbon steel is so popular because it can take quite a beating. Schrade has taken this aspect one step further by making the blade 6.0 mm thick. This means the knife is virtually unbreakable. The solidity of 1095 steel is not its only positive quality. Its ease of sharpening is also a big plus. This means you can easily bring new life to the edge with the supplied sharpening stone when you're out in the field. With 1095, you do need to be careful in terms of rust. That is why Schrade has added a matte black coating to the blade. This means that you only have to worry about the edge, and any wear and tear to the coating. Great when you're out in the field. The handle is made from Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE). It's strong, rubbery, and provides plenty of grip. Just what's needed for a knife handle!
The Schrade SCHF36 comes in a deluxe nylon sheath. It has a front compartment containing the diamond sharpening stone (unknown grit size, approx. 'medium') and a firesteel. Schrade has clearly put some thought into this: the firesteel has a scraper. After all, the coating on the blade means it's not great for scraping. So this is an excellent solution. The sheath has a belt loop that can be attached to belts up to 5.5 cm wide.
About Schrade Knives
Schrade produces great knives for great prices. This is where they excel. There are few brands that can compete with these kinds of prices. However, this does mean that the finish might not always be perfect. Nothing major, and definitely in line with the prices.
