## How does the MOLLE system work?


If you look at the MOLLE system closely you discover a system of loops. The PALS: Pouch Attachment Ladder System. These loops are 1.5” (3.8 cm) wide and located approximately 1” (2.5 cm) apart from each other. On both the bag and the sheath the space in between and width of the loops is similar. As such you can place the webbing on top of each other and weave a [MOLLE-lock](kato://product/KT10103) or [TacTie](kato://product/MXPJC5BLK) through it. This leaves you with a nice connection that evenly divides the weight over the entire web.


As a result the system is incredibly modular. You determine what you place where. Practical for all those soldiers for who it was originally developed, but also for survival enthusiasts, hikers and bushcrafters. Today many backpacks are enhanced with this system of loops. Sometimes you immediately spot these loops, sometimes they are slightly hidden. Even bags that don’t immediately take the MOLLE system into account can be enhanced with a MOLLE compatible sheath. Think of the horizontal straps you sometimes find on the shoulder strap of a backpack. A popular spot for a fixed knife as it enables you to carry it close to your body, ready for whenever you might need it. ## What characterizes a good steak knife?


Good [steak knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_98) have a slim and narrow blade to make sure you easily glide through the meat. The edge needs to be razor-sharp. The danger of a blade that is too thick and blunt is that you need to apply much pressure to cut through your steak. Before you know it you can slip leaving you with a ‘red sauce’ on your plate.


Steak knives are available with serrated and with plain edges. The general rule of thumb is that steak knives should have a ‘plain edge’. Serrations would only mask a lack of sharpness. This is partially true. Did you only purchase a steak knife (set) to cut your steak, entrecote or tenderloin? If so we recommend a steak knife with a nice plain edge. The downside of a serrated steak knife is that the edge cuts into the meat (like when you cut a loaf of bread, for instance, where this is a good thing), after which you pull your steak apart, as it were, instead of cutting it. This ruins the structure of the meat and unnecessarily removes the juices from the meat.

In our latest YouTube interview with Ben Petersen from KNAFS, we dove into the world of knives, community and hands-on production. Just back from Blade Show in Atlanta, Ben shared his excitement about the growing momentum in the knife community and the support of his loyal 'Moon Crew' fans.

One of the main highlights was the introduction of KNAFS’ own CNC-milled knife, the Little Lulu, expected to arrive at Knivesandtools later this autumn. A knife without jimping? “We don’t know how to do that yet,” Ben joked, while stressing how valuable the learning process is now they’re bringing more production in-house.

We also got a sneak peek of the Swanky Sendy, a premium version of the Sendy model with a nautical twist – and a name as quirky as Ben himself. He also confirmed that a slipjoint is in the works, designed to meet European regulations: a non-locking, one-handed opener. Expect something special, with both brass and micarta versions in the pipeline.

Another standout moment? The Lander 6 – a surprisingly sturdy keychain knife made in Taiwan, purpose-built with younger knife enthusiasts in mind. And as if that’s not enough, Ben teased a playful new collaboration with Knivesandtools featuring a typical Dutch touch: think “food-themed scales” on a Lander.

Beyond the product updates, Ben also shared his thoughts on the differences between American and European knife fans. Spoiler: he’s a big fan of the relaxed and courteous Dutch vibe. His goal? The saw is as valuable a tool as your knife or your axe when it comes to outdoor and bushcraft essentials. A saw will save calories and time and will aid in wood processing for your campfire, as well as for sloyd and crafting activities. On top of this, the saw is safer than an axe, particularly for the less experienced outdoors person. So it is worth spending just as much time finding the right saw for your needs as with a knife or an axe. With the vast range of saw blade styles, not to mention sizes, shapes and characteristics, there is a saw for every type of user. One of Knivesandtools' newest products is from a Japanese company called [Z-Saws](kato://category/zsawbrand), who have been around for a long time, and build tools for casual arborists to outdoors people and woodwork professionals alike. Let’s take a look at some of the Z Saw range and help you choose what is right for your needs.

## Japanese Saw Tradition

The Japanese are renowned for their quality woodworking tools, particularly when it comes to hand saws for arborists and carpentry. So it should come as no surprise that Z-Saws have been making traditional hand saws since the 1940s. Since then, they have continued to innovate and expand on their hand saw models. They were also one of the first companies in Japan to introduce Hard Impulse-heating treatment, which is known as one of the great innovations for maximising saw tooth hardness. This works by rapidly heating just the tips of the saw tooth within milliseconds by means of squarewave impulses with a very high peak power to achieve a hardness level of HV800-950 (64.0 - 68.2 HRC), which is the maximum hardness that can be achieved on steel. They say that the secret to providing quality handsaws is down to their non-stop innovation and their decades-long experiences. Z-Saws and their replacement blades are a little less expensive than their perhaps more popular competitors Silky. This can be seen in the build quality and overall material choices, but they are by no means a bad choice! For all intents and purposes, Z-Saws are a fantastic choice for the more economically conscious user.

## Using pull stroke blades

All the saws we are looking at in this range are [pull stroke style blades](kato://content/migrated_topic_721). Pull stroke blades are perfect for pruning saws and for arborists because all the cutting power comes from the pull stroke action of the blade. This pull cut motion will make the blade much easier to use at awkward angles or when you are attempting to cut things at a height, applying a cutting pressure into your material with little effort needed. As well as this, the pulling action allows for more gentle and controlled strokes, so delicate and precise cuts can be made more easily. The forward motion should only be skirting across the cut and clearing it of any dust or pulp that would hinder a clean cut. If you have never used a pull stroke saw before then you may need to practice a little, as the motion feels usual if you are used to the more traditional type saw. People unfamiliar with this motion can very easily snap their blade by putting too much force in the push stroke and having the blade get caught and bend, resulting in a snapped blade. Fortunately, Z-Saws seem to be creating blades that are quite tough and flexible in comparison to their competitors.

Enthusiasts will know who ’Nessmuk’ was and what he meant for modern bushcrafting. Our own bushcrafter Padraig Croke tested the ‘Nessmuk system’ for us with a [Hultafors Ekelund](kato://product/HF841710) axe, [ESEE JG5](kato://product/EE-ESEE-JG5) fixed blade and [LionSteel BestMan](kato://product/LI-BM13-UL) folding knife.


In my [last piece of writing for Knivesandtools](kato://content/migrated_topic_587) I spoke about tool combinations, and choosing the right items for the tasks you may find yourself doing, as well as the type of terrain or woodland you are heading for. This is a topic I personally find fascinating, and I am always interested to see peoples tool combinations, and why they carry what they do. With the seemingly endless array of choices available to us outdoors people today when it comes to tools and brands, the task of finding the right combination that works for you can seem daunting. Survival knife or bushcraft knife? Axe or hatchet? Should I bring a saw?


*The Nessmuk Trio* was a tool combination pioneered by a man named George Washington Sears. Also known as Nessmuk, Sears was a woodsman and early conservationist from the late 1800s, and is regarded, alongside Kephart, as one of the grandfathers of modern bushcraft. His book, entitled *Woodcraft and Camping*, has been in print ever since its publication in 1884, and remains a staple in any book collection. Many, including myself, have poured over his work and attempted to digest and recreate his kit and tools, and today he remains one of the most influential figures in the bushcraft world. Nessmuk believed that his combination of tools (a belt knife, hand axe and pocket knife) could complete any task he needed to accomplish while out in the field. In this article I would like to look at this combination. Not just how it is relevant in today’s outdoor pursuits, but also how we might modify it to suit the types of tasks the modern outdoorsman finds himself working at today.
