This compact powerhouse offers a maximum of 1800 lumens in a very modest format. The two Cree XM-L2 LEDs together provide a substantial light output at a distance of maximum 270 metres. Due to the smart electronic design, this torch also works when only one battery is used. Even more impressive is that the torch also still functions if one of the two LEDs would break. In that case the other LED will continue so you are never without light.  
  


With five different light settings plus a stroboscope-function this strong torch can also be easily tamed for lighter use. The duration of the battery is clearly very good. In the Eco-mode it lasts at least 150 hours at 25 lumens.   
  


The LD50 fits comfortably in your hand due to its flat design. The milled grooves at the side contribute to the proper grip. Because of the recess between the battery-compartments you can attach a lanyard in different ways. You would also be able to use this feature for winding paracord around the handle.

Fijne lamp maar het bijgeleverde polskoord is met geen mogelijkheid door het daarvoor bestemde gaatje te krijgen en daardoor totaal onbruikbaar.





De Fenix LD50 ziet er anders uit dan de meeste zaklampen. Het zijn eigenlijk twee zaklampen in één behuizing. Op die manier krijg je dubbel zoveel licht, en blijft het geheel toch nog redelijk compact. Andere zaklampen waar een vergelijkbare hoeveelheid licht uit komt hebben gewoonlijk meerdere accu's in serie, of drie of vier accu's parallel. De zaklampen waarbij er accu's in serie staan zijn te lang om in een jaszak te passen, de zaklampen met drie of vier 18650 accu's parallel zijn dan weer veel te dik om in een jaszak te passen. Met dit ontwerp past de zaklamp wel in een jaszak, het is dus nog een echte "zaklamp", maar wel eentje die even veel of zelfs meer licht geeft dan grotere exemplaren.
Het gebruik is erg gemakkelijk, mede doordat de knipperstanden een beetje verstopt zitten, je moet er niet steeds weer doorheen als je de lichtsterkte wil aanpassen (dat is soms erg lastig bij heel wat andere led zaklampen).
Ik gebruik de LD50 met Eden 18650 accu's (3400mAh) die ik al eerder had gekocht bij Knivesandtools (de bijgeleverde 123 lithiumbatterijtjes gebruik ik wel op in het zaklampje dat aan mijn sleutelhanger zit). Op termijn zijn de 18650 accu's een heel stuk goedkoper dan telkens een setje van 4 stuks 123 batterijtjes. Als je een zaklamp koopt die op 123 batterijen en op 18650 accu's kan werken, dan is het aan te raden om te kiezen voor accu's en een betrouwbare lader. Een van de voordelen aan de LD50 is dat de accu's onafhankelijk worden gebruikt, ze staan niet in serie, en eigenlijk ook niet parallel, omdat elke led maar op één accu werkt. Daardoor is het zo goed als onmogelijk dat een van de accu's een negatieve spanning zou krijgen als die eerder leeg is dan de andere. Dat probleem heb je wel met accu's in serie, maar bij lithium-ion accu's kan dat erg gevaarlijk zijn (explosie, brand...).

Ik ben dus erg tevreden over mijn aankoop, het is wel een erg dure zaklamp, maar ze is de prijs meer dan waard. De andere Fenix zaklampen die ik heb blijven allemaal probleemloos werken. De eerste Fenix die ik kocht (LD20) heb ik ooit doorverkocht aan een collega, die gebruikt die zaklamp tijdens de wintermaanden dagelijks tijdens het uitlaten van de hond (s' avonds dus). Ik heb hem toen ook aangeraden om een setje low selfdischarge accu's (GP Recyko) aan te schaffen, en die werken ook nog altijd prima na zo'n 5 jaar.

Ik heb er dus wel vertrouwen in dat de LD50 vele jaren zal meegaan zonder problemen, dat ben ik toch gewend van Fenix zaklampen, die zijn heel degelijk in elkaar gestoken.

Ik was het nog bijna vergeten, het speciale ontwerp van de LD50 heeft nog een heel groot voordeel, die kan nooit van tafel rollen, wat met andere zaklampen toch af en toe wel eens gebeurt als je niet goed oplet...

Een paar weken terug bestelde ik op een zaterdagavond de Fenix LD50 bij Knives and Tools. Je weet dan dat je de lamp niet eerder dan dinsdag kunt verwachten. Maar dit keer niet: op zondag kreeg ik bericht dat het pakket was verstuurd, op maandag werd het bezorgd. Uitstekende service!
En dan de lamp zelf. Toen ik deze Fenix voor het eerst zag, raakte ik geïntrigeerd door het ontwerp: feitelijk twee lampen in één platte behuizing, met één knop om alles te bedienen. En dan de output: twee niet al te grote lampkoppen die 1800 lumen aan licht produceren. Dat is veel, voor zo'n betrekkelijk kleine lamp.
Nu ik een paar weken met het ding heb kunnen experimenteren, kan ik niet anders zeggen dat het een fantastische lamp is. Hij ligt verrassend lekker in de hand, hij is klein genoeg om in de binnenzak van je colbert te schuiven, hij staat heel stabiel op zijn onderkant, heeft een supereenvoudige bediening en hij geeft inderdaad veel licht - veel meer dan de andere zaklampen die ik ooit gekocht heb, zoals de Fenix PD32 UE en de Nitecore SRT7. De straal, waaraan je overigens niet kunt zien dat die uit twee koppen komt, is heel 'floody', maar reikt ook flink ver, zo bleek tijdens een nachtelijke wandeling in een donker (en wat unheimisch) park bij mij in de buurt.
Handig is dat de twee koppen onafhankelijk van elkaar aangedreven worden door de batterijen - CR123A's of 18650 accu's. Je kunt die batterijen/accu's ook door elkaar gebruiken, wat normaal funest voor je zaklamp zou zijn. Of je kunt ook ervoor kiezen slechts één kop te gebruiken, die dan in de hoogste stand nog altijd 900 lumen produceert.
Minpuntjes: het gaatje waardoor je het polskoordje moet bevestigen, is wel heel klein. Het vereiste behoorlijk wat priegelwerk om dat er door te krijgen. Ook jammer is dat het schroefdraad van de twee buizen niet geanodiseerd is, waardoor je echt uit één buis de batterijen/accu moet weghalen, als je slechts één kop wilt gebruiken.
'Minor details', het is een prachtige, kwalitatief hoogstaande lamp. Fenix maakt gewoon heel goed spul.
