The Spyderco Byrd series is a cheaper alternative to the popular, yet often more expensive, Spyderco range of knives.   
  
 
These knives are designed and manufactured in China from high grade materials in accordance with the quality standards set down by Spyderco.   
  
 
The blades are made from 8Cr13M0V stainless steel, which is comparable to Japanese AUS8 stainless steel, as far as quality is concerned.   
  
 

The Byrd Crossbill model with its stainless steel handle is a fine example of one of the knives in this range.   
  
 

The knife features a blade that is shaped like a hawk’s bill. It can easily be opened using one hand thanks to the comet-shaped hole located in the blade. It also features a sturdy and reliable back-lock system that locks the blade securely into place when opened. The curved point prevents slippage when cutting.   
  
 

Cut out of the lock’s release is an added safety feature known as a Boye dent, which allows you to tightly grip the handle without fear of accidentally releasing the lock.   
  
 

The knife also features a sturdy two-way pocket clip for tip-up or tip-down carry.

Een klein beetje side-to-side bladeplay, dat is alles wat er mis aan is, er komen redelijk snel krasjes op het handvat, maar dat kun je verwachten bij zoiets.

Verder is het een mooi, sterk mes, het enige echte nadeel is dat de pocket clip niet echt deep-carry is.

Zou ik het aanraden?
Als je een mooi mes wilt, ja.
als je een heavy duty mes wilt, nee.

Het is duidelijk niet gemaakt voor zwaardere activiteiten, ook het aanscherpen is niet het makkelijkste met de curved blade, het is te doen, maar het neemt wel wat meer tijd in beslag.

Stoer en prachtig vouwmes om kartonnen dozen 'klein' te maken, enveloppen te openen of zelfs de taaie gevlochten vislijn door te snijden. Het is elke keer weer een feest om het mes te openen. De Crossbill voelt sterk en solide aan, totaal geen speling op het lemmet. De backlock is strak, edoch soepel en voor mij als linkshandige een uitkomst. 
Het design is super mooi maar dat is natuurlijk persoonlijk. De afwerking is top en doet niet onder voor de VG-10 stainless steel Spyderco's uit Seki-City, op een paar details na.

De Crossbill is superscherp uit de doos maar met de WorkSharp- Ken Onion heb ik het scheermesscherp geslepen. 

Het Spyderco Byrd assortiment is een fantastische aanvulling op de duurdere Spyderco zakmessen!



Bien que produit en Chine, qualité de fabrication d'origine. Rien à redire, très belle finition et tranche vraiment bien. Modèle sympa en plus et d'une taille bien proportionnée. Pas de jeu dans le couteau, normal c'est un spyderco! Et pour le prix avec les 10% bien plus qu'intéressant!

Dit mes zou ik niet omschrijven als allround vouwmes.
Het mes lijkt erg groot in de hand, en oogt ook ERG agressief.
Voor mij is dit mes "leuk om te hebben" en heeft jammer genoeg door zijn uitstraling verder geen functie.

Ik heb het mes natuurlijk wel getest! Hij kwam mooi scherp binnen, de vorm van het lemmet wat een beetje op een klauw lijkt maakt het erg makkelijk om met een trek beweging iets door te snijden, denk aan touw, of karton, openen van dozen.
Door de fijne punt kan het mesblad erg gemakkelijk onder dingen komen, dit is een voordeel als iets los gesneden moet worden wat strak vast zit, van dat gebundelde papier bijvoorbeeld, dat kan vast zitten met van die plastic straps.

De solide "back lock" zet dit mes stevig vast als hij geopend is. de constructie is ook erg mooi, het pinnetje van het draaipunt van het lemmet in het handvat is zo goed als niet gezien.

Ik zie voor dit mes verder weinig functie als je met mensen of in de buurt van mensen werkt, veel vertrouwen zal je er niet door krijgen. Wel een leuk mes voor verzamelaars en mensen die dus inderdaad veel los moeten snijden.

Conclusie: Leuk mes, maar absoluut niet voor EDC!
