## 1. Placing an order

All orders are placed online either via our website [www.knivesandtools.co.uk](http://www.knivesandtools.co.uk), or when contacting our customer service department via phone.

## 2. Shipping and Delivery time

Our warehouse is located in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. All products are shipped from this location. Every product listed on the website has a stock label indicating if a product is in stock and ready for shipment or not. Orders to the United Kingdom are shipped with UPS and normally take 3-5 business days to arrive.

## 3. Prices and VAT

Prices listed on the website are in British pounds and include VAT, fees and charges. Customers from the Channel Islands, with the exception of Jersey and Guernsey, do not pay VAT at knivesandtools.co.uk, but will have to pay local VAT upon delivery.

## 4. 18+

All tools listed on knivesandtools.co.uk enhanced with an 18+ logo are only sold to people aged 18 or over. By placing an order and accepting our terms & conditions you declare that you are at least 18 years of age. We may ask you to provide us with proof of identification before we ship your order.

All orders containing products that are labeled 18+ will be shipped with a mandatory identification/age check upon delivery and require an adult signature.

If you are unable to offer sufficient proof that you, as recipient and creator of the order, are at least 18 years of age or older, UPS will take the package and return it to Knivesandtools in the Netherlands. If you are not at home during the initial delivery attempt, UPS will try again later or send the parcel to a pick-up point. In either case, you must be able to identify yourself and prove you are at least 18 years of age or older. If you are unable to do so your parcel will be returned to Knivesandtools. Please note that we may charge you, the customer, for any expenses made during the return process.

## 5. Returns and Refunds

We want to make sure that the products you've ordered live up to your expectations. If, for any reason, you are not satisfied, you can return your order for a full refund* within 30 days of delivery, in accordance with your rights under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.

*Please note: we may ask for compensation if a product you return can no longer be sold as a new product because it has been used or is damaged.

Our customer-friendly return option ensures a smooth process with no unexpected expenses. You return orders at your own risk and we do not cover any return costs.

Kato Group BV cannot be held accountable for missing or damaged returns and products. As such you should always wrap your return with care. We recommend using the box it came in. Also return accessories or promotional items.

We will always credit you the same way you paid us (ie credit card or wire transfer) You will receive a refund within 14 days after we have received the return shipment.

### Damaged or defective items

If you receive a damaged or defective item please let us know via [info@knivesandtools.co.uk](mailto:info@knivesandtools.co.uk). In most cases we will ask you to return the product for further inspection. After inspection we will either replace, repair or refund the product. You will never be charged any additional shipping or handling fees for replacement shipments.

### Warranty

All items on our website come with a warranty of at least 2 years, even though the manufacturer limits this warranty to 1 year. We say ‘at least’ because there are brands who offer a longer period (e.g. Fenix, Eden).

## 6. Local Laws and Regulations

Every country has its own laws when it comes to knives and other items. When you order from knivesandtools.co.uk you agree to being fully accountable for importing the ordered item(s) to the county of destination. Knivesandtools is not liable when and if items are confiscated by authorities.

### Processing your order

* To properly process your order we use your NAW data. We store your information just in case you would like to return your products or for warranty purposes.
* If necessary we can also share your information with third parties such as our carriers to make sure your order is properly processed.

### Processing payment transactions

* To properly process the payment of your order you choose a payment method. You share the remaining information with this payment method and your bank, not with us.

### Communication

* In order to simplify the communication with regards to your offer and/or other questions, we use your contact information. This information and the contents of this communication between you and us is stored at a secure location.

We take technical and organisational security measures to limit abuse and unauthorised access to personal information. Our internet connection is secured with a SSL. Access to our database is restricted via secured accounts. Our employees are aware of the new privacy rules and adhere to them.

## Newsletter

We send out a weekly newsletter with which we want to inform interested parties about our products and the amazing adventures that lie ahead when you use them. During the ordering process, or via your account, you can register to our newsletter. Each newsletter contains a link you can use to unsubscribe. Sometimes we send newsletters to a smaller group of subscribers with subjects we believe not everyone is interested in.

## What we DON’T do with your information!

We DO NOT make personalized offers: the price is the same for everyone. How else do you keep things fair?

# What about the warranty?

Almost all products we sell are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. However, how that warranty works and what the terms and conditions are can differ per brand or product. For that reason we love to tell you more about what we mean when we say warranty and what common exceptions and point of attention are. It may be a confusing amount of exceptions and differences so buckle up: here we go.

## What does your warranty apply to?

In nine out of ten cases you will receive a warranty on **material and manufacturing flaws** when you purchase a product. This means that if there is a defect in the product caused by a flaw in the material, or the manufacturing you are entitled to a warranty.

This also means that wear and tear never entitles you to a warranty. After a while each product will wear out, to a greater or lesser extent. This, however, doesn’t mean that the product or the manufacturer is to blame. Some products wear out faster because they are perhaps of lesser quality. As long as this is inherent to the product, and not an exceptional material or manufacturing flaw you won’t be able to invoke the warranty offered by the manufacturer.

## So what does warranty mean?

What a brand feels should be a part of a warranty differs as well. For instance, if a product breaks within the warranty period you are legally entitled to a repair or replacement. This means that a knife can sometimes be fixed and enhanced with a new blade or any other replacement part. Sometimes it means you will receive a completely new product. If the product is no longer produced the product can be replaced by a product of equal value. This is taken care of by the supplier or manufacturer.

Some manufacturers choose to replace the product with a refurbished product. This is a fixed and checked version of the product. As long as this product is of equal value as the product you sent in, the manufacturer may decide to do so.

## What about the warranty period?

Many products list a warranty period. Often a minimum of two years after purchase, up to life. Within that period you can claim the warranty offered.

It is important to know that for some products the conditions of the warranty differ from other products produced by the same manufacturer. Think of a bottle of oil or a tube of diamond paste for a strop. Fortunately these are also products for which the warranty is (almost) never claimed.

Some manufacturers can also decide to, for instance, offer a standard two-year warranty which they will extend to five years if you register online or send a postcard.

## What does life-long warranty mean?

What life-long warranty means differs per brand. While some brands consider life-long to be as long as the initial purchaser is still alive, some feel life-long actually applies without a limit. However, most common is that a warranty lasts as long as the expected life of the product.

There are American manufacturers who print a label saying ‘Lifetime Warranty*’ on the box. However, when you look up the star on the back of the box you will notice that life-long only means when you live in North-America, and that you ‘only’ get a 25-year warranty if you live elsewhere.

## Defects due to incorrect use

Sometimes something happens to a product because it isn’t correctly used. Defects caused by incorrect use are practically never a part of the warranty. Simply think before use if the product was intended for what you are about to do with it.

A favourite example is batoning with an outdoor knife where you cut or split a piece of wood by using a baton-sized stick to hit the spine of a knife. Yes, many knives can handle this. Some are even made for it. However, in the end it is a task which should be carried out with an axe.

We do have to state here that some brands give you a warranty on anything. No matter what you do with the product. These are, however, rare exceptions.

## Rust and warranty

Knives rust. That is a given. Even when a knife is made from ‘stainless’ steel it can still rust. It is, after all, not ‘stain free’. This is the result of external factors: moisture, acids or salt. Or a combination of the three. Think of salty sea air or fruit acids. Just clean and maintain your product well. You could, if need be, also use [Flitz](kato://product/FZ002) to remove the rust. It is never covered by the warranty.

## Modifications and disassembly

For many products the following applies: if you modify the product yourself your warranty will expire. Sharpening a knife is, of course, not included as it is necessary maintenance. But as soon as you start filing, painting, sanding, soldering, anodizing etc. your warranty will expire immediately. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

## Batteries and warranty

When it comes to batteries things are slightly more complicated when it comes to warranties. For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. For that reason we always recommend to always visit the website of the manufacturer in case of a defect to see what type of warranty conditions they adhere to. After all, these may be subject to change.

Warranty explained

The frame lock, originally developed by Chris Reeve and known as the Reeve Integral Lock (RIL), is a commonly used locking mechanism for pocket knives. The frame lock is very similar to the liner lock, but offers extra strength in that a milled-out part of the handle itself falls behind the hinged blade to lock it in place. Instead of the thin liner of a liner lock, the frame lock ensures you benefit from the robustness of the handle itself. In addition, your hand provides the lock with additional strength. As your hand squeezes the handle, you pinch the frame lock closed. As a result, inadvertent unlocking will hardly ever occur.

The axis lock, a Benchmade invention, is a robust locking mechanism famous for its reliability and ease of use. This system uses a spring-loaded pin perpendicular to the hinge side of the blade. When the knife is opened, this pin drops into a recess at the back of the blade, locking it firmly between two supports. This construction ensures very strong and stable blocking, which is essential for safe use. In addition, an axis lock can be 'worn in'. Because the little bar (the crossbar) can wear in quite a bit across the bevel at the back of the blade, the lock remains perfect for years, on a frequently used knife. To close the knife, simply slide the spring-loaded bar, releasing the lock and allowing the blade to fold. This makes the axis lock not only easy to operate, but also safe, as your fingers will not come near the cutting edge while closing the knife. The axis lock is easy to operate by both left-handed and right-handed knife fans.

A button lock is a locking mechanism for your pocket knife that uses a button to lock and release the blade.	 When the knife is opened, a pin slides into a recess in the blade, locking it securely. To close the knife, simply press the button, which releases the pin and allows you to close the blade.

The liner lock, developed by Michael Walker, is one of the most commonly used locking mechanisms for pocket knives. This system uses a spring-loaded metal lockbar, integrated into the handle, which snaps behind the flattened pivot point of the blade, known as the lockface. This construction ensures that the blade remains securely locked and cannot hinge back to the closed position. To unlock the knife, the user must push the lockbar away from the lockface, after which the knife can be safely closed.

The back lock, also known as the lockback, is a popular and robust locking mechanism used in many knives. The system works with a spring that spans across the back of the handle. When opened, it snaps behind the hinge point of the blade, firmly locking the blade. To unlock and close the blade, press the recess in the back of the handle. If this recess is in the middle of the handle, it is called a mid lock. The operating principle remains the same: simple, reliable and effective.

The Benchmade Griptilian, designed by Mel Pardue, has been an ever fixed mark in the pocket knife world for dozens of years. In addition to the 'regular' Griptilian there is also the Mini Griptilian. But why choose the smaller Griptilian over the large one and vice versa? We made an overview of the differences.

UK knife law allows you to carry non-locking pocket knives with a blade length up to 3 inches (7.62 cm) without any need for a valid reason.


You are allowed to carry a knife which exceeds these guidelines in public, but please remember: you will do need a good reason to carry it. Gov.uk has the following to say on good reasons to carry a knife:


*'Examples of good reasons to carry a knife in public can include:*


* *taking knives you use at work to and from work*
* *taking knives to a gallery or museum to be exhibited*
* *the knife is going to be used for theatre, film, television, historical re-enactment or religious purposes, eg the kirpan some Sikhs carry*


*A court will decide if you’ve got a good reason to carry a knife if you’re charged with carrying it illegally.'*


## Abuse is still illegal


Also remember that using any knife (legal or illegal) in any threatening way, is also illegal. So using your (legal) Swiss Army knife in any threatening way is still illegal.


## UK Friendly


Because of the conditions listed above, we like to call these knives [UK friendly](kato://content/migrated_pageid_1073) instead of UK Legal. Knives that are sold on our website that are not UK Friendly are fine as long as you keep them in your own home, or on your own property.


## Knife-free zones


There may be zones where you are not permitted to carry any knife at all, regardless of size or locking mechanism. As you may understand this often is the case in football stadiums, bars, clubs, city centres and other crowded places.

* gravity knives
* sword-sticks
* samurai swords (with some exceptions, including antiques and swords made to traditional methods before 1954)
* hand or foot-claws
* push daggers
* hollow kubotan (cylinder-shaped keychain) holding spikes
* shuriken (also known as ‘death stars’ or ‘throwing stars’)
* kusari-gama (sickle attached to a rope, cord or wire)
* kyoketsu-shoge (hook-knife attached to a rope, cord or wire)
* kusari (weight attached to a rope, cord or wire)
* machetes
* zombie (style) knives*

The definition of a zombie knife has changed since 24-08-2024:

A **zombie style knife** is a bladed weapon with:

* A plain cutting edge
* A sharp pointed end, and
* A blade of over eight inches long

Which also has one or more of the following:

* A serrated cutting edge over two inches long
* More than one hole in the blade
* Spikes
* More than two sharp points in the blade
