## Which tools do I need? 
The measuring or marking tools you need depend on the type of job and the materials you are working with or plan to work with. Below, you'll find an overview of the main categories and types of tools for measuring and marking.

 
### Measuring tools 
Measuring tools will ensure a clean end result, whether you are working with wood, metal or other materials. A spirit level is indispensable to make sure something is perfectly horizontal or vertical. For short, straight distances use a ruler, available in steel, aluminium or plastic depending on the material you are working with. If you want to measure accurately, a caliper, analogue or digital, is the right choice. It allows you to measure inside, outside and depth precisely. For longer lengths, there are tape measures and folding rulers: the tape measure is compact and flexible, while the folding ruler remains firm and straight, which is useful for vertical measurements. To check or mark off angles, use a try square for right angles, a bevel gauge for variable angles between 0° and 180° and a mitre square for fixed angles such as 45°. 


### Marking tools 
Marking tools allow you to machine your workpieces to exact size and shape. A mechanical pencil gives a consistent, sharp line without the need for sharpening, ideal for wood and other smooth surfaces. For marking parallel lines, use a crosscut wood, for example when making wood joints. Even more precise are a marking knife or a kiridashi, with which you do not draw lines but carve them: this creates marks that do not fade and also serve as a guide for your saw or chisel. If you work with hard materials such as metal, then use a scriber pen, which allows you to make thin, permanent lines in the surface.

Narex mainly divides up their chisels and gouges into several series, namely:

### Narex Wood Line Profi / Wood Line Plus series
The workhorses in the Narex range, intended for both beginner and advanced woodworkers. Hardness for both is around 59 HRC with beechwood or hornbeam handles and Chrome-Manganese (Cr-Mn) steel for the blade. The Woodline series is characterised by the steel strike ring. The Woodline Plus series has no metal striking ring, but a convex rounded handle for a comfortable grip during prolonged work.

### Narex Richter series
Narex's premium chisels. Richter chisels are made from Chrome-Vanadium (Cr-V) steel, which is first normally hardened and then cryogenically treated for high hardness Furthermore, they have ultra-thin side surfaces that make it easy to work in narrow corners.

### Step 1: clamp your knife in the Wicked Edge

The Wicked Edge sharpening system comes with a ruler and a depth key. Use these to make sure that your knife is always clamped in exactly the same place. You can choose two vertical positions when clamping. To ensure that the degree markings for the sharpening angle are accurate, the blade should protrude about 5/8 inch (15.8 mm) above the clamp. ## Steel vs. Iron

Steel is a material that mainly consists of the chemical element iron (Fe). Iron is the name of an atom, and steel that consists of 100% iron is not suitable for daily use.

Never use the term iron unless you are talking of the iron atom.

## Tooling steel

Tooling steel is steel suited for tools like knives, chisels and other tools.

The main element added to steel is carbon. The addition of 1-2% carbon makes it possible to harden steel.

If the tooling steel must be stainless steel, 8-30% chrome is added to the steel. Nickel is not used to make the tooling steel into stainless steel, as that hampers the hardening of the steel.

Besides carbon and possibly chrome, other elements are added sometimes to improve the quality of the steel on specific points. The best known elements are Vanadium and Molybdene. The influence of those elements is not described in this article as it is of a very complex matter.

## Structure

It is very important to know that the composition of a type of steel in itself does not say anything about the characteristics of the steel.

Steel consists of iron crystals, that exist in different shapes (by shapes we mean the order of the atoms) and sizes. Additions like carbon can be present in the crystals or in different shapes between the crystals. Carbon can be present as balls or discs between the crystals but can also bind to the iron atoms (carbids).

The structure of the steel therefore not only depends on the composition but also the treatments the steel underwent. Think of heat and cold treatments and welding (= shaping steel in a solid shape by remodelling).

## Hardening

When you slowly heat liquid steel (with 1-2% carbon) the atoms will order differently under different temperatures. That is because the atoms start to vibrate more strongly and need more room to move under increasing temperatures.

Above 200 °C the atoms can take on another order. It is not possible below 200 °C and the structure is frozen as it were.

Between 200 °C and 700 °C, ferrite crystals are formed (ferrite is a name for the order of the iron and carbon atoms, just like austenite and martensite).

In ferrite crystals the iron atoms are close together and there is no room for the carbon atoms between the iron atoms. That’s why the carbon attaches to the edges of the ferrite crystals.

Ferrite steel is soft and tough. It is used as construction steel, but is not suitable as tooling steel.

Above 700 °C the iron atoms arrange themselves differently. Austenite crystals are formed.

In austenite crystals there is room for carbon atoms, between the iron atoms. If you keep the steel at a temperature above 700 °C for a while, the carbon atoms move from the edges of the crystals to the space between the iron atoms in the crystals.

By quickly cooling off the steel from this phase to below 200 °C (by for example immersing in water or oil) the carbon atoms cannot leave the crystals. Because the carbon atoms are in the way, the iron atoms cannot re-arrange into ferrite crystals. Martensite crystals are formed instead.

In that format the steel is considerably harder and is called hardened steel.

The story sounds simple, but many parameters affect the result. Think of: the structure of the steel before it is hardened, the exact temperature, the duration of heating, the speed of cooling and the influence of other elements added purposely, or unintended as impurities in the steel.

## Tempering

After a piece of steel has been hardened, it is too brittle to be used and is full of inner tensions. The method to remove that brittleness and tensions is called tempering.

During tempering the steel is heated for a few hours at 200-300 °C. In that temperature the crystals re-arrange themselves which decreases the inner tensions and brittleness.

The duration is critical here because the steel will become progressively softer.

## Hardness

Hardness is the resistance of the steel to permanent distortion at microscopic level.

The hardness of the steel is measured by pressing a pointed object with a certain force against the steel and measuring the size of the imprint.

The hardness of tooling steel is expressed in degrees Rockwell C, often abbreviated as HRC.

## Hardness of knives steel

The table below gives an overall overview of the characteristics of knives steel with different hardness levels.

* Up to 52 HRC: Too soft for making knives.
* 52-54 HRC: Quite soft steel, reasonable quality.
* 54-56 HRC: The hardness of many French chefs’ knives. The steel is hard enough for kitchen use, but regular use of a sharpening steel is required to keep the knife sharp. Knives of this hardness are usually easy to sharpen.
* 56-58 HRC: Hardness applied for professional German kitchen knives. Knives of this hardness remain sharp long enough for kitchen use, can be sharpened on a sharpening steel and are reasonably easy to sharpen.
* 58-60 HRC: Hardness you usually find in better quality pocket knives like Spyderco, Cold Steel and Buck, and kitchen knives from Japan, like Global. Those knives remain sharp considerably longer than cheaper knives, but are a lot more difficult to sharpen.
* 60-62 HRC: Knives of this hardness remain sharp for a long time, but they are at risk of becoming brittle and the knives are often difficult to sharpen. These disadvantages are quite easy to suppress with modern steel types, but the quality depends on the quality of the whole production process.
* 63-66 HRC: Currently knives of hardness up to 66 HRC (Twin Cermax of Zwilling J.A. Henckels) are available. These are no knives suitable for the majority of users, but rather a specific group of amateurs. Knives of such hardness have the disadvantage that they become brittle, resulting in breakage of blade parts when used carelessly and often a low resistance against corrosion. In other words: clean immediately after use.

## Other characteristics

Hardness is not the only characteristic of steel. Other mechanical characteristics are a.o. the draw strength, sturdiness (impact resistance), and cold brittleness.

Corrosion resistance is also an important chemical characteristic.

Hardness alone is not the be all and end all.

## Influence on the price of a knife

A knife in a good, hard steel type will cost a lot more than the same knife made from a lesser steel type.

The difference in price is only due to the cost price of the steel for a small part. The steel processing leads to the high difference in price.

Sharpening modern hard steel types like S90V are much more time consuming and more demanding on the used materials than the sharpening of 440C for example.

Hardening and tempering is a lot more critical with modern steel types and must sometimes be entrusted to specialised companies.

The steel type has an important impact on the price of a knife. If you want a really good knife you must be prepared to pay the price for it. But you will get an excellent piece of equipment in return.

## A bit of background

The F1X is the little brother to a range of knives by Fällkniven that come in 3 different sizes, so called the [F1](kato://category/fallknivenf1), [S1](kato://category/fallknivens1) and [A1](kato://category/fallknivena1). The original Fällkniven model F1 has been the official survival knife for pilots in the Swedish Air Force since 1995 giving it the apt name of The Pilots Knife. Most military aviation units issue some kind of survival knife to their pilots in case their aircraft are shot down behind enemy lines and the crew needs tools to facilitate their survival, escape, and rescue. Despite being in service for almost 30 years, the F1 has gone through a number of iterations, with changes and improvements made to the edge geometry, steel choices, handle shape and materials, and sheath styles. It seems they are still making improvements to this unassuming little powerhouse.

## First impressions

I loved the feel of the S1X when I first got it. The weight and chunk of the steel, the tactile and grippy scales, and the slim-ish handle, perfect for using the knife in gloved hands, as it’s designed to be used. The F1X is the same… the same but different. The shorter blade length gives it a beautiful balance in the hand actually, perhaps even more so than I felt with the S. That shorter blade allows me a lot more control and finesse, making the F1X a little more suited to bushcraft uses and nimble knifework. Added to this, the pinpoint swedge construction on the back of the blade allows for really precise work. It allows me to see where my knife's point is going exactly, and less friction reduces the knife's drag and prevents it from getting stuck in things like cans (we’ll get into that later).

Bushcraft enthusiast Padraig Croke has been using the [ESEE Izula](kato://content/migrated_pageid_884) for many years. He’s the perfect person to tell us about his long term experiences with the ESEE Izula in this Expert Review.


I have had the Izula II for a number of years now, and it has become a really solid part of my kit. At 4mm thick and with a comfortable 4 inch handle, it’s a lot more knife than it first appears. The Izula II was my first “non traditional” bushcraft knife. Having only dealt with scandi grinds up to that point, the Izula was my first introduction to a flat grind blade and ultimately led to a love affair with [ESEE knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_356).


## Why carry a companion blade?


Often times, when packing for a trip or a day hike the choice of tools comes down to the pairing of certain combinations. For example, if I was to take my [Morakniv Garberg Carbon](kato://product/MO13147) blade with me, a perfect companion to this could be a simple [Mora 106 carving blade](kato://product/MO106-1630), or my [Eldris](kato://content/migrated_pageid_449?ms_fk_zm-series=%5B%27Eldris%27%5D&Category=0ee353ea-8981-44f3-9d0a-fbf0881dbc09), which is stainless. The question I ask myself is, what am I doubling up on here? Is there a reason I would choose to carry this blade over that one, and what do I plan to do when I’m out? Is it a craft based camp, or am I just going for a hike and some lunch? What type of woodland am I going to and what type of tools are going to be needed to process wood. If I was in a coniferous woodland for example, then maybe I would not need a heavy processing tool like an axe with me, as a saw and a large belt knife would maybe prove more effective. My small tinder and kindling sources in a woodland like that are most likely going to be processed by hand, gathering bundles of resinous branches off the forest floor or between the crooks of the trees. Or if my material is marginal… some light batoning and feathersticking. Carrying a larger knife in this instance would make sense, as the lack of an axe might limit your options, should you need to process something larger or split logs down. On the other hand, a broadleaf forest will consist of harder, denser woods that will burn much longer but will require larger tools to process it, such as a bow saw and a hatchet or small axe. In that case, the carrying of a hatchet would mitigate the need to carry a larger knife.


When it comes to carrying a companion blade or “neck knife”, I have found the ESEE Izula II finding its way into my kit on almost every trip since I’ve bought it, about two years ago, becoming one of my most beloved tools to carry. Paired with a larger knife, such as my [Fällkniven S1X](kato://product/FKS1X) or [ESEE PR4](kato://product/EE-ESEE-PR4), the Izula can really deal with the more nimble of tasks required of a blade in the field. Food processing is a little tricky, due to the thickness of the blade, but ferro rod striking, notching and carving, and cutting cordage are tasks I regularly assign to the Izula II. Of course we all love our primary belt knives, but in reality I have found when I carry a neck knife like the Izula II, it’s often more than enough to tackle basic camp chores.

**Robert Herder kitchen knife**

Except for the fact that this is a stunning tool this [Robert Herder kitchen knife](kato://product/RH9218159518) is an homage to the ancient, nearly extinct traditions from the city of Solingen. A truly unique knife that was forged by hand by one of the last old masters in the business: Rudolf Broch.


The knife is razor-sharp and properly finished. It is not that heavy and feels great in hand. Despite the relatively short blade you can use this knife for almost any task in the kitchen. Especially when you cut a lot of vegetables it is perfect. The non-stainless steel blade is traditionally polished blue. A technique that is almost extinct and only used on the most luxurious knives.

## How did this collaboration between Spyderco and yourself come to be? 

Every year, Spyderco hosts the Amsterdam Meet. This is usually right before the IWA Outdoor show, when they're already travelling from the USA to Germany, which is where the IWA is held. The Spyderco Meet is a meet-up for knife enthusiasts and Spyderco, where they present the latest production models and prototypes not normally shown to the wider public.    It was at one of these Meets, in 2018, that I gave my design and concept to Eric Glesser. Eric Glesser is the son of Spyderco's founder Sal Glesser. At the time, my design was only two pieces of cardboard glued together, shaped like the knife I envisioned. It was simply meant to give an impression of the size and ergonomics. In late 2019, I unexpectedly received an email that Spyderco had made two 'working' prototypes of the design. Fast-forward five years to 2023 and the Spyderco Stok was born!   

## We know you're a big fan of Spyderco's pocket knives, so why did you choose to design a fixed knife? 

I designed the Spyderco Stok in 2018, shortly before I started working at Knivesandtools. At the time, I was in art school and looking for a fixed blade for everyday use. When you are finger-deep in paint, constantly opening packages, a fixed blade shines in its simplicity and accessibility. A fixed knife requires less maintenance than a pocket knife with hinged parts where dirt, paint and tape residue can get stuck inside the mechanism. That's why I chose to design a fixed knife.   

## The Spyderco Stok is available with a bowie blade and drop point blade. Why did you choose these blade shapes? 

Most fixed knives were too large for me, or unsuitable for an urban environment. As a knife enthusiast and Spyderco collector, I asked myself the question: what would the perfect fixed blade Spyderco knife look like to me? With that in mind, I designed the Stok.
