## What do you need to pay attention to when purchasing binoculars for children?

When you're buying binoculars for your child, and you don't want one of those toy binoculars that break within two days, there are a few things to keep in mind. With a slightly heftier design compared to traditional Laguiole knives, these knives feel great in hand. The solid backlock is easy to unlock because it is at the very end. The wide and angular opening at the end offers ample space for a lanyard or other cord. This prevents you from losing your unique knife.

A counterfeit knife is a knife that was made to closely resemble an existing model, including markings. Everything is done to make sure the product looks as 'real' as possible. Still, it's never 100% the same. People also call these types of knives 'clones' or '1:1', terms you often come across on forums.

## Your new basecamp workhorse

The [Fox FX-140XL](kato://product/FOFX-140XLMI) is a large camp knife that certainly lives up to its XL title. But with the availability of extremely capable belt knives more easily carried and used, where does a knife this size fit into your adventures? Aside from the obvious ‘survival’ tag that so many blades of this size get categorised into, I wanted to put this blade to test and see what it was capable of and where it might be best suited. I began to see this knife as more than just a personal carry, but perhaps a tool that would suit a larger basecamp situation.

## What kind of brand is WE Knife?


In 2016 we first became acquainted with the Chinese [WE Knife.](kato://content/migrated_pageid_495) This, however, didn’t mean that we hadn’t seen any knives produced in the same factory before. After all, for over ten years the factory behind WE Knife had been producing great pocket knives for famous brands. The next logical step? Take those years of experience and establish your own brand: WE Knife.


WE Knife designs and produces top-quality knives,  made from only the best materials. They use the high-end types of steel also used by the best American and European manufacturers. Many people need to actually hold a WE Knives knife in their hands to believe that so much quality can be produced for such amazing prices.


WE Knife is one of the pioneers who helped change the concept that knives produced in China are moderate budget knives. Fortunately those days are long gone! Today many amazing knives are produced in China. These knives are often of even better quality than those produced by Western manufacturers.

With Carl Mertens we recently welcomed a new member to our ever-growing kitchen knife family. These knives from Solingen are a little different from many other German brands. Carl Mertens is not afraid to enter paths less-travelled, daring and absolutely not conservative. A continuous search for innovation and following the current trends is what characterizes this brand.  The result is a range of exceptionally designed knives, with surprising details.


Of course there is more to Carl Mertens than striking designs. As befits a German brand Carl Mertens represents sustainability, functionality and precision. To put it more specifically: Gründlichkeit. And we can definitely state that the company has more than enough experience to call itself a real specialist. After all, for nearly 100 years the company has been busy producing kitchen tools.


## Extensive kitchen empire


Already in 1919 Carl Mertens started as the supplier of sharpened knife steel and handles. However, over time they started focusing on cutlery after which the company became a fully-fledged kitchenware empire. Led by Curt Mertens Jr., Carl’s grand-son, the range of this family company expanded with practically everything you can come up with when you think of (preparing) food and drinks. 


## Two collections of kitchen knives


Recently we added a number of Carl Mertens kitchen knives to our own range. Or better said: two different series, the Carl and the Metz. Both are comprised of all imaginable kitchen knives, from chef’s knives to peeling knives and from Santoku to sashimi knives. The difference between both series can be found in the choice of materials. The blade of the Carl collection is made from X50CrMoV15-steel, while Cromova was used for the Metz collection. The handle differs only slightly. Both collections have been enhanced with walnut wood. The Metz-collection, however, has handles made from European walnut wood while the Carl handles are made from American walnut wood and a little darker. In terms of design the Metz collection is perhaps a little more striking because of its sabre grind.

New Victorinox Companion Series: Swiss pocket knives without blades?!

In our latest YouTube interview with Ben Petersen from KNAFS, we dove into the world of knives, community and hands-on production. Just back from Blade Show in Atlanta, Ben shared his excitement about the growing momentum in the knife community and the support of his loyal 'Moon Crew' fans.

One of the main highlights was the introduction of KNAFS’ own CNC-milled knife, the Little Lulu, expected to arrive at Knivesandtools later this autumn. A knife without jimping? “We don’t know how to do that yet,” Ben joked, while stressing how valuable the learning process is now they’re bringing more production in-house.

We also got a sneak peek of the Swanky Sendy, a premium version of the Sendy model with a nautical twist – and a name as quirky as Ben himself. He also confirmed that a slipjoint is in the works, designed to meet European regulations: a non-locking, one-handed opener. Expect something special, with both brass and micarta versions in the pipeline.

Another standout moment? The Lander 6 – a surprisingly sturdy keychain knife made in Taiwan, purpose-built with younger knife enthusiasts in mind. And as if that’s not enough, Ben teased a playful new collaboration with Knivesandtools featuring a typical Dutch touch: think “food-themed scales” on a Lander.

Beyond the product updates, Ben also shared his thoughts on the differences between American and European knife fans. Spoiler: he’s a big fan of the relaxed and courteous Dutch vibe. His goal? For the community to keep growing independently of him. “I want to be the facilitator, not the ringleader.”

[Benchmade](kato://content/migrated_pageid_282) also made an appearance at the 2019 Shot Show. With an enormous stand, dozens of employees and multiple new products they definitely wowed the crowds. Upon arrival we were happily welcomed by the Benchmade team and were given the opportunity to take a look at all new pocket knives with Hans Albing, the product line manager at Benchmade. It was an amazing opportunity!


## The Benchmade Griptilian collection got a S30V steel upgrade


Big news! The Benchmade Griptilian collection will get a S30V steel upgrade. Initially Benchmade used 154CM steel. A great type of steel for daily use. S30V steel, however, is a lot more robust, stainless and retains its sharpness longer. Not too bad right? The new Griptilians could become a little more expensive than the 154CM steel version. Fortunately you don't have to worry. According to Benchmade it will only be a minor difference.


## The Benchmade 560-1 Freek


Another famous model which was given an update is the Benchmade Freek. This new version of the Freek has been enhanced with a handle made from grey and black layered G10, instead of the grivory/versaflex handle. The blade also got an upgrade from CPM S30V steel to CPM M4 steel. An incredibly solid and hard type of steel. To add a little colour Benchmade added a thin red G10 liner on the inside of the handle. Red anodized aluminium standoffs keep the handle together. If you are already a fan of the original Freek collection, this robust version is something you will love as well!

Cooking and baking are two of my biggest hobbies. I own more than enough pans, oven dishes and baking tins. But that stunning and good kitchen knives existed wasn't something I knew. Today they are showing off on my counter top in the matching knife block. I use them every single day.

As my freshly baked bread comes out of the oven the first thing I want to do is try a piece. However, cutting a warm loaf of bread is not that easy.
