The compact briefcase of the Diafold Magna-Guide sharpening system contains all parts necessary to quickly and easily sharpen your knife into a razor sharp condition. The heart of the set consists of two Diafold sharpening stones. These are stones with the design of a butterfly knife where the handle is folded around the diamond sharpening stones. This is how the stones are optimally protected. The stones can be used on two sides and each side has its own grain size. The colour in the well-known DMT-circled pattern shows which grain size it concerns.
For the experienced sharpener it is very well possible to use the Diafold sharpening stones as any other sharpening stone. When folded they can easily be carried with you and are optimally protected. The strength of this system is the guide system which ensures everyone to always sharpen with the correct sharpening angle. This works very simple. You fasten the knife into the plastic holder and set it for the correct sharpening angle using the rods with indentations. A table will help you find the correct position.
Then the guide rod is 'glued' to the sharpening system by means of the strong magnet. Now the sharpening may begin: in the same way you sharpen on any other sharpening stone. Thanks to the guide rod that runs through the openings of the holder, there is no other way than sharpening in the correct angle. It does not get any more complicated.
Information about grain size DMT sharpening stones
The grain size of a diamond stone and a water stone cannot be plainly compared. This is due to the fact that the construction and materials used are essentially different. In case of a water stone the sharpening grains are incorporated into the stone. These grains will be loosened from the stone during the sharpening process in the form of a kind of sharpening paste that arises. In case of a diamond stone, the diamonds are tightened into the surface of the stone.
The most important thing is that the fold of a knife can be repaired with the extra coarse stone and that the result will be, after going through the four sharpening stones, an optimally sharpened knife.
Important to know
You may choose for dry or wet sharpening with this sharpening system. The advantage of wet sharpening is that the stone is lubricated and sharpening residues are disposed of. Only use water and never oil if you want to sharpen wet. In addition it is good to know that a diamond sharpening stone has to be used a couple of times in order to obtain the optimum sharpening result. The operation of a new sharpening stone is a little too coarse. Only after 5 to 10 knives the stone will obtain its definitive working.
