We are happy Böker will continue to expand the successful line of, in Solingen produced, traditionals. Our favourite is the Böker Barlow. It is for a reason we had a [Knivesandtools Exclusive](kato://product/BO100502) made of this exact knife. This year Böker has also introduced a couple cool Barlows. In the image listed above you, for instance, see the Böker Barlow Integrals. With micarta liners and bolsters from one piece. As such the total weight has been reduced with another 20 grams. These knives only weigh 30 grams! Modern, but still traditional.

The current form of the Company *Heinr. Böker & Co* was founded in 1869. This means that in 2019 Böker celebrates its 150th anniversary. We were invited to the festivities in May, 2019 and visited the Manufaktur in Solingen. We got a close look at the production process and love to include you in this factory tour at Böker Solingen. ## The exclusive version

That's why we asked Böker for a different handle material: micarta! This material is made from canvas and synthetic resin and offers plenty of grip. We think this material is a fantastic choice for handles. You can clearly see the texture of the layers of textiles in the material. And even better: when using a pocket knife with a micarta handle, you will notice that the handle gets darker. This is due to the grease in your hands, among other things. This is a normal process that makes each knife unique in time! A special quality of micarta is that it offers great grip even in wet conditions. Arguably, it's even more grippy when wet than when it's dry.

Like the standard version, the blade is made from 440C steel. This is a good type of stainless steel that retains its sharpness well and is easy to sharpen when the time comes. _Never change a winning team_.

In addition to testing Swiza pocket knives we also tested other knives. It is, after all, the best way to compare results. Swiza might not be the first brand you think of when you think of Swiss pocket knives. Most people think of Victorinox. For that reason it is important to compare both brands. To complete the comparison we also added the Böker Plus Tech-Tools to the mix. Comparable pocket knives because of their size and function. To test a great variety of materials and colours we selected the following models:

Take, for instance, the cooperations with famous designers such as CRKT and Böker. Here you will also find the first premium types of steel and damascus steel, for excellent prices.

## Determine the sharpening angle for your knife

The cutting edge of a knife can have different angles. The smaller the angle, the sharper the knife. Therefore, the cutting edge of a very sharp knife, is very narrow. Japanese knives are made of very hard steel (starting from 60 HRC) and can be made extremely sharp, when sharpened under a small angle. Other, for example German knives (55-58 HRC), often are made of slightly softer types of steel and are sharpened under a wider angle.

The angle of the cutting edge of Japanese knives is usually 30°. For normal knives you can use an angle between 36° and 40°. The sharpening angle for your knife is half the angle of the cutting edge (after all, you will sharpen on 2 sides). The sharpening angle of a Japanese knife (please find a few examples below) is therefore 15° (30°/2) and of other knives 18° to 20°.

Does your knife become dull or does it damage quickly? Then maybe you are sharpening the knife too thin. In this case, we recommend using a larger sharpening angle.

Jesper Voxnaes is a Danish knife maker. Designer of the famous CRKT Pilar collection. His designs are an integral part of the knife world. Jesper Voxnaes doesn't only work with CRKT, but also with other giants, such as Böker and many Italian knife brands. His designs are artistic and very functional.

## Burnley Knives

As well as his collaborations with big names such as [Böker](kato://content/migrated_pageid_292), [CRKT](kato://content/migrated_pageid_337) and [MKM](kato://content/migrated_pageid_943), Lucas Burnley also has his own company: Burnley Knives, also known as BRNLY. He founded this company in 2013 with his wife Maddie. In addition to knives, they also make tools, clothing and leather goods. Each Burnley Knives knife is handcrafted by Lucas in his workshop in Orleans, Massachusetts. For that reason, the production and availability of these rare knives is very limited and Lucas doesn't take orders. Furthermore, he never offers his custom knives via the internet. Lucas Burnley's handmade knives are mainly sold by raffle at various knife shows and occasionally in the Burnley Knives (private) Facebook community. Some of these knives are put into production by, for instance, CRKT. These knives are of course widely available, for example at Knivesandtools.

## MKM and the Normar

MKM stands for Maniago Knife Makers. MKM is a consortium representing knife-makers from around the world with their headquarters in Maniago, Italy. [MKM](kato://content/migrated_pageid_943) has a range of knife companies working under their name, from LionSteel and Viper to Fox and Mercury, and each company has its own specialty. They have therefore created a large collection, with something for everyone. MKM has slipjoints and gentleman’s knives, as well as tactical fixed knives and EDC pocket knives. All made from the best materials and finished according to the Italian standard.

Jesper Voxnaes, whom I mentioned in the intro, was the mind behind the shape and style of this beauty. For those who may not be familiar with Jesper: he is a Danish knife maker with an impressive list of clients including the excellent GiantMouse Knives, as well as Böker, Spyderco, CRKT and Helle. Jesper is probably one of the most trusted in the industry right now, and his fingerprints are all over this knife. When discussing Vox with Knivesandtools, they pointed out some style features of Vox’ previous work that is also evident in the Normar: ‘... especially the handle, [which] is very recognizable as a Vox design. Check out a GiantMouse GMF2, for instance.’

Another friend, Alex Kremer (designer of the Böker AK1), then helped with 3D-printed prototypes of the folder. Once I was finally happy with the design, WE Knives only had to make a few small adjustments to make it suitable for mass production.

MKM Knives is one of the most exciting announcements of 2018. A new Italian brand, but still an old acquaintance. The name MIKITA also appears, something we also hadn’t heard of before. What is up with that? What is MKM Knives and why do we look forward to it?


## MKM and MIKITA


The abbreviation MKM stands for Maniago Knife Makers. Each knife enthusiast knows that Maniago is the knife capital of Italy. Perhaps even of the south of Europe. As Germany has Solingen and people in England know Sheffield, everyone knows that the best Italian knives come from Maniago. Literally at the same block at an industrial site in a suburb in this city in the north of Italy you will find all the large names from the Italian knife world. [Fox Knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_378), [LionSteel](kato://content/migrated_pageid_443), [Viper](kato://content/migrated_pageid_486), Mercury and many others.


MIKITA is a cooperation of the last four companies. LionSteel, Viper, Fox and Mercury signed a network agreement in which they state to focus on raising the bar for knife makers in Maniago. They do so under the name of MIKITA: Maniago Innovation Knives Italy. By exchanging knowledge and ideas they are stronger together and increase the quality. 


The brands who joined forces to establish MIKITA now launched a new knife brand: MKM knives. The famous Italian quality Maniago knives are famous for, made by the four cooperating companies. Now you must understand why we are so excited!


## MKM Knives: cooperation with Bob Terzuola and Lucas Burnley


To immediately leave a mark with appealing models made by famous designers MKM decided to cooperate with the two biggest names in the international knife world: Bob Terzuola and Lucas Burnley. Both designers with an impressive track record, and many successful designs on their name.


Bob Terzuola can definitely be called one of the founders and pioneers in the field of the modern pocket knife. After all, he wrote incredibly popular books about quality knives, but more importantly: his designs have been loved for dozens of years. There are very few designers who last that long.


Lucas Burnley is a lot younger than Bob Terzuola, but in just a few years he has made a massive contribution to the knife world. As a designer he is incredibly productive and dozens of his designs are produced by famous brands such as CRKT and Böker, and now also by MKM Knives.
