# What about the warranty?

Almost all products we sell are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. However, how that warranty works and what the terms and conditions are can differ per brand or product. For that reason we love to tell you more about what we mean when we say warranty and what common exceptions and point of attention are. It may be a confusing amount of exceptions and differences so buckle up: here we go.

## What does your warranty apply to?

In nine out of ten cases you will receive a warranty on **material and manufacturing flaws** when you purchase a product. This means that if there is a defect in the product caused by a flaw in the material, or the manufacturing you are entitled to a warranty.

This also means that wear and tear never entitles you to a warranty. After a while each product will wear out, to a greater or lesser extent. This, however, doesn’t mean that the product or the manufacturer is to blame. Some products wear out faster because they are perhaps of lesser quality. As long as this is inherent to the product, and not an exceptional material or manufacturing flaw you won’t be able to invoke the warranty offered by the manufacturer.

## So what does warranty mean?

What a brand feels should be a part of a warranty differs as well. For instance, if a product breaks within the warranty period you are legally entitled to a repair or replacement. This means that a knife can sometimes be fixed and enhanced with a new blade or any other replacement part. Sometimes it means you will receive a completely new product. If the product is no longer produced the product can be replaced by a product of equal value. This is taken care of by the supplier or manufacturer.

Some manufacturers choose to replace the product with a refurbished product. This is a fixed and checked version of the product. As long as this product is of equal value as the product you sent in, the manufacturer may decide to do so.

## What about the warranty period?

Many products list a warranty period. Often a minimum of two years after purchase, up to life. Within that period you can claim the warranty offered.

It is important to know that for some products the conditions of the warranty differ from other products produced by the same manufacturer. Think of a bottle of oil or a tube of diamond paste for a strop. Fortunately these are also products for which the warranty is (almost) never claimed.

Some manufacturers can also decide to, for instance, offer a standard two-year warranty which they will extend to five years if you register online or send a postcard.

## What does life-long warranty mean?

What life-long warranty means differs per brand. While some brands consider life-long to be as long as the initial purchaser is still alive, some feel life-long actually applies without a limit. However, most common is that a warranty lasts as long as the expected life of the product.

There are American manufacturers who print a label saying ‘Lifetime Warranty*’ on the box. However, when you look up the star on the back of the box you will notice that life-long only means when you live in North-America, and that you ‘only’ get a 25-year warranty if you live elsewhere.

## Defects due to incorrect use

Sometimes something happens to a product because it isn’t correctly used. Defects caused by incorrect use are practically never a part of the warranty. Simply think before use if the product was intended for what you are about to do with it.

A favourite example is batoning with an outdoor knife where you cut or split a piece of wood by using a baton-sized stick to hit the spine of a knife. Yes, many knives can handle this. Some are even made for it. However, in the end it is a task which should be carried out with an axe.

We do have to state here that some brands give you a warranty on anything. No matter what you do with the product. These are, however, rare exceptions.

## Rust and warranty

Knives rust. That is a given. Even when a knife is made from ‘stainless’ steel it can still rust. It is, after all, not ‘stain free’. This is the result of external factors: moisture, acids or salt. Or a combination of the three. Think of salty sea air or fruit acids. Just clean and maintain your product well. You could, if need be, also use [Flitz](kato://product/FZ002) to remove the rust. It is never covered by the warranty.

## Modifications and disassembly

For many products the following applies: if you modify the product yourself your warranty will expire. Sharpening a knife is, of course, not included as it is necessary maintenance. But as soon as you start filing, painting, sanding, soldering, anodizing etc. your warranty will expire immediately. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

## Batteries and warranty

When it comes to batteries things are slightly more complicated when it comes to warranties. For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. For that reason we always recommend to always visit the website of the manufacturer in case of a defect to see what type of warranty conditions they adhere to. After all, these may be subject to change.

## Why a pressure cooker?

You use a pressure cooker when you want to shorten the cooking time of a specific dish. A stew that would take ages to cook will be finished a lot sooner in a pressure cooker, for instance. This is because you put the ingredients under a lot of pressure in a pressure cooker. You will save up to 70% of your time. Also, when cooking vegetables the vitamins are much better preserved. So not only more efficient, also healthier.

## 18/10 stainless steel

The pans are made from top-quality 18/10 steel. This number represents the percentage of chromium and nickel in the material: 18% chromium and 10% nickel. ## Novogrill base

## Differences between pressure cookers and skillets

## Features of a splitting axe
A splitting axe is a type of axe specifically designed to split large pieces of wood. The head of a splitting axe is shaped like a wedge. This allows the axe to efficiently cleave through a block of wood.

### How to choose a suitable splitting axe
Not only is it important to find a high-quality splitting axe, you should also find the right one for you. Choosing the wrong size splitting axe will make splitting wood unnecessarily difficult. Not only would it cost more time, it would also strain your back and shoulders. It's better to avoid this.

A general rule of thumb is that the length of the handle should be about the same length as your arm. It's not a very precise science, as long as these lengths are similar, you're good to go. This way, you at least avoid having a tall person working with an axe meant for someone half their size. At the same time, smaller logs can sometimes be more difficult to split with a larger splitting axe. In those cases, a smaller splitting axe can be a godsend.

### Splitting axe or maul?
The main difference between a splitting axe and a maul is the backside of the axe head. A splitting maul has a large, heavy and usually flat backside. This can be useful for a number of reasons: the additional weight will increase the power of your swing, and you can hit the flat back if the axe gets stuck inside the wood. This flat back is also perfect when you're using a metal wedge for the hardest blocks of wood. In short: a splitting maul can be useful for more serious splitting work.

## Lids

A lid ensures that the heat stays inside the pan. As such your water will come to the boil faster, and your dish will stay warm longer as well. In addition, a lid ensures that the moisture falls back inside the pan. Perfect when preparing a stew. We have glass lids, stainless steel lids and cast iron lids. There is something for everyone!

When finding a lid, always make sure you check the diameter of your pan. Make sure it is the same as the diameter of the lid. We always measure the outer rim when finding the diameter of a pan or lid. Choose, if possible, a lid from the same brand as your pan.

## Copper pans: maintenance

To make sure the copper pan stays in great shape you need to maintain it. Regularly clean the outside of the pan with copper polish. As such you maintain the stunning copper colour. Clean the pan with water and a mild detergent after each use. Is there still food residue that was left behind? Fill the pan with lukewarm water and leave it for a couple hours. Afterwards clean the pan with a sponge.

## Enamel cast iron pans: maintenance

A bit of TLC goes a long way. We do not recommend cleaning the cast iron pan in a dishwasher. With a cleaner you can remove stains, dirt and heat stains. In addition, cleaner will preserve the glossy finish. Cast iron pans are made to last a lifetime, but do need to be maintained once in a while.

## Stainless steel pans: maintenance

When a pan becomes too hot the outside of it can discolour. With a stainless steel maintenance polish you can easily clean your stainless steel pans, making them look like new. Because of the composition of the polish you only need a little bit each time for the best results. The stainless steel maintenance polish is scratch-free on steel, brass and chrome.

Buying guide: what do you want to cut? For every ingredient the right knife

The [nakiri](kato://content/migrated_pageid_70) is a traditional Japanese kitchen knife. You can recognize it from its rectangular blade with a square, flat tip and straight edge. At first glance a Nakiri looks a lot like a cleaver or even a santoku. And yet there is a big difference between them. A nakiri is often thinner and only made to finely cut vegetables. But how does that work exactly? And what cutting techniques does a nakiri knife excel at?

## Cutting

It sounds obvious, but you should always use the right knife for the right task. Chopping with a cleaver, boning with a boning knife and cutting meat with a carving knife.

**Correct use**

- Avoid sideways movements with the knife. After all, you could damage the edge. The knife is simply not built for this. So make sure you pay attention to the fact that you only move up and down with the knife.

- Look out for bones, frozen food and hard seeds. For it you should grab a cleaver or boning knife. Not only do such hard things make your knife blunt, they could even chip the blade. Such a waste of a great knife!

- Never put too much pressure on a knife. After all, a kitchen knife is so sharp to make sure it will smoothly cut through anything. When you have to put a lot of pressure on a knife chances are that the edge is blunt. Check the blade and, if necessary, grab another knife. After all, if you slip you could end up on your cutting board having to live with the consequences. Not only for the knife, also for your own safety.

- Always use a plastic, or even better, a wooden cutting board. Marble and glass are easy to clean, but not good for the blade because they are too hard. A good rule of thumb is: if the knife doesn’t scratch the board the board will be too hard for the edge.

## Variations in the sharpening angle

In a time of CNC milling and laser cutting it is expected that each knife is identical. When, for instance, you grab 10 knives they should all be the same. In reality, however, that is not really true. Individual parts of a knife are made by a machine, but the assembly is almost always done by hand. The same applies to sharpening. Most knife makers sharpen knives by hand on a fine sharpening belt.

This means that the sharpener determines the angle by hand. A trained hand might be able to maintain that pre-determined angle. However, a difference between 19º and 22º isn't something you can blame anyone for. As such, the sharpening angle we measure is merely an indication. A listed value of 20º could therefore mean that the knife you receive has been sharpened at an angle of 18º or 22º. For guidance systems this is a practical indication to make sure you can at least start with the right angle. However, it is not a fixed fact you must adhere to at all costs.

Of course there are also gigantic knife companies that use an automatic knife sharpener. [WMF](kato://category/wmfkitchen), for instance, sharpens all knives with a laser-controlled system to make sure each knife ends up with exactly the same sharpening angle. [Victorinox](kato://content/migrated_pageid_448) also uses this type of machine. It has to, with the millions of pocket knives that it produces each year.

**Sharpness of factory knives**

You would expect a knife to be optimally sharp when it leaves the factory. In practice, however, this is somewhat different. The sharper the knife, the sooner you will notice it becoming blunt again. A razor-sharp edge needs maintenance to stay razor-sharp. If you don't sharpen your knife, you'll soon get the idea that it's becoming dull. Chefs use a sharpening steel for a reason. It constantly keeps the knife razor sharp!

A simple or standard chef's knife does not come from the factory razor-sharp. There are three reasons for this. You are less likely to notice that the knife is getting blunt, the knife needs less sharpening and it makes the knife a lot cheaper. Sharpening knives takes time. The finer and sharper you sharpen the knife, the more expensive the whole process and the more expensive the knife will be in the end. For this reason, many suppliers choose not to sharpen their knives beyond a 2000 to 3000 grit Japanese whetstone.

'ESEE Xancudo, didn't it already exist?' That was our first response. Until we read it again. Xancudo. Not [Zancudo](kato://content/migrated_pageid_889?ms_fk_zm-series=%5B%27Zancudo%27%5D&Category=78953a53-61db-4786-bb14-0192441e93dd). It turns out to be a fixed version of the popular ESEE pocket knife: the Zancudo.

A good coating guarantees crisper, [brighter images](kato://content/migrated_topic_125) and also clearer contrasts. For uncoated lenses approximately 4% of incident light per*lens / air transition* is reflected. Since an [objective](kato://content/migrated_topic_130) is comprised of a number of lenses, several of these air transitions are found in binoculars. Take, for example, binoculars with 7 glass elements per side (a 2-lens objective, 2 prisms and a 3-lens ocular - this is not an exceptional combination!), this would mean that only 56.5% of the light emitted by the objective actually reaches your eye. Using a simple coating, this loss is reduced to 1.5%, for instance. The amount of light reaching your eye has now increased to 80%. In a *multi-coated objective*, the lenses are coated with several layers and this yields greatly improved results. And bear in mind that all the 'false light' in the binoculars reduces the contrast of the image.


The product specifications may state that the binoculars are multi-coated. However, this does not automatically mean that all the glass surfaces have undergone this multi-coating treatment, although, in any case, at least some of the glass surfaces have been multi-coated.


Besides the optical features, the *mechanical features* of the coating are of importance. This, of course, mainly refers to the coating on the outer parts of the lens. Of course, the coating needs to be tough enough to withstand vigorous cleaning. No matter how tough the coating is, you must always take special care and use clean materials when cleaning your binoculars. Be careful not to use grainy cloths when cleaning your binoculars as this will cause scratches! 

The coating greatly affects the brightness, contrast and colour rendition of the binoculars. It is therefore certainly worth paying careful attention to this!


It is simple to see whether the lens has been coated or not. Just look into the lens with a source of light behind you and slowly move the binoculars. If you see a blue colour cast, this means that the lens has been coated. If you see a greenish colour with a cast to other colours, then the lens has had at least two coatings.


A very special type of coating is known as *phase-correctionor dielectric coating*. In the case of roof prisms, part of the light shifts in phases (wavelength shift) and is polarised when it is emitted from the prism. This is caused by the optical construction of the prism. The light component is adversely affected and therefore so is the brightness of the image. This is something you would obviously want to avoid. Phase-correction coating on the roof prism will resolve this problem.


The type of glass used also greatly affects the quality of the contrast and image.


Another important point to consider is that the product description for cheap binoculars is not always fully accurate. For instance, binoculars described as fully multi-coated, are, in reality, may not really be fully-coated at all. Or, when described as having undergone coating treatment, you wonder whether the image quality has benefited from this or not.

**Button lock**: Button-lock mechanisms are very user-friendly and offer a quick and easy way to operate the lock with one hand. You only need to press the button to unlock the blade. Button locks are very quick to use, making them also suitable for emergency situations. Moreover, it's very fun to fidget with.

**Frame lock**: Frame locks are sturdy and reliable, with a mechanism that is integral with the handle scales. In contrast to a liner lock, a frame lock is part of the pocket knife's frame; hence the name. The clever design of a framelock only makes the lock stronger when you hold the handle firmly. ### Steel types

The Civivi Elementum is available in different steel grades, each with their unique properties:

**D2 steel**: D2 steel is known for its excellent toughness, hardness and wear resistance, making it the perfect steel type for prolonged use. It offers a good balance between sharpness retention and easy sharpening. Please note: this steel is not stainless. This can be easily solved with a bit of oil, though!

**Damast steel**: Damast steel, or damascus steel, offers great performance, combined with a beautiful appearance thanks to the unique pattern created during the forging process. However, it is important to note that the damascus steel of an Elementum knife is generally less corrosion resistant, so regular maintenance will be required.

**Sandvik 14C28N**: Sandvik 14C28N steel is known for its excellent sharpness retention and corrosion resistance, ideal for EDC use. This steel is easy to sharpen and retains this sharpness for a long time.

**Nitro-V steel**: Nitro-V steel strikes an excellent balance between hardness, corrosion resistance and wear resistance. It is a relatively new steel on the market that is appreciated for its performance for various EDC cutting tasks.

### Handle materials

In addition to choice of steel type and locking mechanisms, there are many handle materials to choose from. The advantage is that users can choose which material best suits their preferences and needs. We'll list the most popular handle materials!

**G10**: G10 is the most common handle material within the Elementum range. It is known for its excellent durability, grippiness and lightweight properties. It delivers a good balance between strength and comfort during use and is resistant to external influences.

**Micarta**: Micarta has a warm look and feel to it. It is a very grippy material, even in wet circumstances. The nice thing about micarta is that it develops a patina over time, making your knife unique!

**Carbon fibre**: Carbon fibre is known for its strength and light weight. No wonder it's such a popular material in the car industry. Carbon fibre has a cool, modern look and is incredibly durable. However, it might feel a bit less grippy than some other materials.
