## 1. Placing an order

All orders are placed online either via our website [www.knivesandtools.co.uk](http://www.knivesandtools.co.uk), or when contacting our customer service department via phone.

## 2. Shipping and Delivery time

Our warehouse is located in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. All products are shipped from this location. Every product listed on the website has a stock label indicating if a product is in stock and ready for shipment or not. Orders to the United Kingdom are shipped with UPS and normally take 3-5 business days to arrive.

## 3. Prices and VAT

Prices listed on the website are in British pounds and include VAT, fees and charges. Customers from the Channel Islands, with the exception of Jersey and Guernsey, do not pay VAT at knivesandtools.co.uk, but will have to pay local VAT upon delivery.

## 4. 18+

All tools listed on knivesandtools.co.uk enhanced with an 18+ logo are only sold to people aged 18 or over. By placing an order and accepting our terms & conditions you declare that you are at least 18 years of age. We may ask you to provide us with proof of identification before we ship your order.

All orders containing products that are labeled 18+ will be shipped with a mandatory identification/age check upon delivery and require an adult signature.

If you are unable to offer sufficient proof that you, as recipient and creator of the order, are at least 18 years of age or older, UPS will take the package and return it to Knivesandtools in the Netherlands. If you are not at home during the initial delivery attempt, UPS will try again later or send the parcel to a pick-up point. In either case, you must be able to identify yourself and prove you are at least 18 years of age or older. If you are unable to do so your parcel will be returned to Knivesandtools. Please note that we may charge you, the customer, for any expenses made during the return process.

## 5. Returns and Refunds

We want to make sure that the products you've ordered live up to your expectations. If, for any reason, you are not satisfied, you can return your order for a full refund* within 30 days of delivery, in accordance with your rights under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.

*Please note: we may ask for compensation if a product you return can no longer be sold as a new product because it has been used or is damaged.

Our customer-friendly return option ensures a smooth process with no unexpected expenses. You return orders at your own risk and we do not cover any return costs.

Kato Group BV cannot be held accountable for missing or damaged returns and products. As such you should always wrap your return with care. We recommend using the box it came in. Also return accessories or promotional items.

We will always credit you the same way you paid us (ie credit card or wire transfer) You will receive a refund within 14 days after we have received the return shipment.

### Damaged or defective items

If you receive a damaged or defective item please let us know via [info@knivesandtools.co.uk](mailto:info@knivesandtools.co.uk). In most cases we will ask you to return the product for further inspection. After inspection we will either replace, repair or refund the product. You will never be charged any additional shipping or handling fees for replacement shipments.

### Warranty

All items on our website come with a warranty of at least 2 years, even though the manufacturer limits this warranty to 1 year. We say ‘at least’ because there are brands who offer a longer period (e.g. Fenix, Eden).

## 6. Local Laws and Regulations

Every country has its own laws when it comes to knives and other items. When you order from knivesandtools.co.uk you agree to being fully accountable for importing the ordered item(s) to the county of destination. Knivesandtools is not liable when and if items are confiscated by authorities.

# What about the warranty?

Almost all products we sell are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. However, how that warranty works and what the terms and conditions are can differ per brand or product. For that reason we love to tell you more about what we mean when we say warranty and what common exceptions and point of attention are. It may be a confusing amount of exceptions and differences so buckle up: here we go.

## What does your warranty apply to?

In nine out of ten cases you will receive a warranty on **material and manufacturing flaws** when you purchase a product. This means that if there is a defect in the product caused by a flaw in the material, or the manufacturing you are entitled to a warranty.

This also means that wear and tear never entitles you to a warranty. After a while each product will wear out, to a greater or lesser extent. This, however, doesn’t mean that the product or the manufacturer is to blame. Some products wear out faster because they are perhaps of lesser quality. As long as this is inherent to the product, and not an exceptional material or manufacturing flaw you won’t be able to invoke the warranty offered by the manufacturer.

## So what does warranty mean?

What a brand feels should be a part of a warranty differs as well. For instance, if a product breaks within the warranty period you are legally entitled to a repair or replacement. This means that a knife can sometimes be fixed and enhanced with a new blade or any other replacement part. Sometimes it means you will receive a completely new product. If the product is no longer produced the product can be replaced by a product of equal value. This is taken care of by the supplier or manufacturer.

Some manufacturers choose to replace the product with a refurbished product. This is a fixed and checked version of the product. As long as this product is of equal value as the product you sent in, the manufacturer may decide to do so.

## What about the warranty period?

Many products list a warranty period. Often a minimum of two years after purchase, up to life. Within that period you can claim the warranty offered.

It is important to know that for some products the conditions of the warranty differ from other products produced by the same manufacturer. Think of a bottle of oil or a tube of diamond paste for a strop. Fortunately these are also products for which the warranty is (almost) never claimed.

Some manufacturers can also decide to, for instance, offer a standard two-year warranty which they will extend to five years if you register online or send a postcard.

## What does life-long warranty mean?

What life-long warranty means differs per brand. While some brands consider life-long to be as long as the initial purchaser is still alive, some feel life-long actually applies without a limit. However, most common is that a warranty lasts as long as the expected life of the product.

There are American manufacturers who print a label saying ‘Lifetime Warranty*’ on the box. However, when you look up the star on the back of the box you will notice that life-long only means when you live in North-America, and that you ‘only’ get a 25-year warranty if you live elsewhere.

## Defects due to incorrect use

Sometimes something happens to a product because it isn’t correctly used. Defects caused by incorrect use are practically never a part of the warranty. Simply think before use if the product was intended for what you are about to do with it.

A favourite example is batoning with an outdoor knife where you cut or split a piece of wood by using a baton-sized stick to hit the spine of a knife. Yes, many knives can handle this. Some are even made for it. However, in the end it is a task which should be carried out with an axe.

We do have to state here that some brands give you a warranty on anything. No matter what you do with the product. These are, however, rare exceptions.

## Rust and warranty

Knives rust. That is a given. Even when a knife is made from ‘stainless’ steel it can still rust. It is, after all, not ‘stain free’. This is the result of external factors: moisture, acids or salt. Or a combination of the three. Think of salty sea air or fruit acids. Just clean and maintain your product well. You could, if need be, also use [Flitz](kato://product/FZ002) to remove the rust. It is never covered by the warranty.

## Modifications and disassembly

For many products the following applies: if you modify the product yourself your warranty will expire. Sharpening a knife is, of course, not included as it is necessary maintenance. But as soon as you start filing, painting, sanding, soldering, anodizing etc. your warranty will expire immediately. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

## Batteries and warranty

When it comes to batteries things are slightly more complicated when it comes to warranties. For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. For that reason we always recommend to always visit the website of the manufacturer in case of a defect to see what type of warranty conditions they adhere to. After all, these may be subject to change.

Civivi is a part of the famous [WE Knife](kato://content/migrated_pageid_495). For years, they have been known for their excellent quality at the highest possible level. They introduced Civivi for their more cost-conscious fans. Civivi-knives are amazing in terms of price-quality ratio. The finish is excellent, the designs very cool, the materials good. You couldn't possibly ask for much more. 

The designs of Civivi knives are as eccentric as WE Knife's. Hardly surprising, given that many Civivi pocket knives are designed by the same people. Civivi is not the only brand offering pocket knives in this price segment, however, Civivi remains unmatched in terms of finish and price-quality ratio.

Old Bear is a part of the Antonini Knives knife group. Ever since 1925 they have traditionally been producing classic pocket knives. All knives are produced in the knife capital of Italy: Maniago. The Old Bear brand emerged in 2015 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Antonini Knives. Because of their years of experience, they produce top-quality knives.

Shane Sibert designed the Adamas in 2012. Originally, this collection consisted of fixed blades designed for military personnel and other professionals as part of Benchmade's Black Class line, though nowadays there are folding knife versions available as well. The Mini Adamas is a great example! Compared to the original Adamas it might be Mini, but with an 8.3 cm blade it is not a small pocket knife. The Mini Adamas is a bit better suited for EDC use than the standard version of the Adamas.

The Kai Minamo series is a 3-part extension of the Shun Premier series, developed in collaboration with German television chef Tim Mälzer. The collection consists of a utility knife, a paring knife and santoku. They feature a beautiful 32-layer damascus-steel blade and a handle made from black pakka wood with great details. The 3 Kai Shun Minamo knives all have similarly designed blades. These knives are a fusion between a typical Japanese santoku and a European chef's knife. An extremely useful blade shape, suitable for any cutting task.

Field Notes is an American brand founded in 2007 by graphic designer Aaron Draplin and publisher Jim Coudal. Inspired by classic agricultural notebooks, the brand makes paper products such as notebooks and planners. All products are manufactured in the US with attention to detail and sustainability. Field Notes is known for its minimalist aesthetic, small size for easy carrying and use of sustainable materials and the iconic Futura font. The brand is known for its minimalist style, robust quality and iconic slogan: ‘I'm not writing it down to remember it later, I'm writing it down to remember it now.’

Real classics in the knife world. Many who prefer large pocket knives consider either of these knives to be the perfect EDC knife. But what are the differences? Are there things they have in common? We will tell you!

Of both knives many limited editions were produced throughout the years. For this versus we compare the standard models: the [Spyderco Paramilitary 2 C81GP2](kato://product/SPC81GP2) and the [Benchmade 940 Osborne](kato://product/BE940).

## The similarities between the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 and Benchmade 940 Osborne

Both knives are produced in the United States, can be opened with one hand and have a blade length of approx. 8.6 cm. Because of this blade length the Paramilitary 2 and the 940 Osborne are a part of the larger EDC knives category.

Both knives are enhanced with a pocket clip. No deep-carry pocket clips you often see on many other knives. As such you carry the knife a lot higher in your pocket. You can, however, mount the clip of the Paramilitary 2 in four places on the handle. For the 940 you have two options.

At the 2019 Shot Show this brand introduced dozens of knives we can expect in the coming year. With Wouter from Spyderco we selected a couple of these new models!


## The Spyderco Para 3 lightweight


The fans asked for it, so here it is. The Spyderco Para 3 lightweight! Characterizing for the lightweight collection is the FRN handle: a glass reinforced plastic that is incredibly strong. These knives are incredibly light and as such very popular amongst pocket knife users. Previously the Para 3 was only produced with a steel liner construction with G10 handles on top. Considering its size the G10-Para 3 isn't a heavy knife. Spyderco, however, was able to make the new Para 3 even lighter. The Para 3 lightweight weighs only 68 grams. That is 28 grams less than the G10 version. The steel of the blade also transformed. The Para 3 has a blade made from CTS BD1N steel. A type of steel we often see on Spyderco's budget models. The new Para 3 lightweight will therefore also be a lot cheaper than the model enhanced with the S30V steel G10!

## Sharpening angle and use

The sharpening angle you use for Japanese knives is often approx. 15 degrees and 20 degrees for European knives. You determine the angle by first placing the knife perpendicular to the sharpening steel. This is a 90-degree angle. Take half and half again and you are left with 22.5 degrees. The last part is a bit of a guess, but this is how you know you got the right angle. At first it will be difficult to maintain this angle, but practice makes perfect. You could start by practising with an old or cheap kitchen knife before sharpening your favourite kitchen knives. It is almost impossible to destroy your knife. Even when sharpening at the wrong angle you can always sharpen the knife again at the right angle.

Instead of 'securing' the sharpening steel on the cutting board you can also sharpen freehand. You hold the sharpening steel horizontally and 'cut' away from you, again from the heel towards the tip. There are professional chefs with years of experience who use this method because it is faster. The tip-on-cutting-board-method, however, offers you more stability and makes it easier to maintain the right angle. Find out for yourself which method will suit you best!

## Choosing a sharpening steel: diamond or ceramics

There are, as mentioned before, two types of sharpening steels: with ceramic or diamond sharpening particles. Diamond-coated sharpening steels are enhanced with a metal core that contains small [synthetic diamonds](kato://content/migrated_topic_570). These diamond particles are not only coarse, they are also rock-solid. As such you can quickly sharpen your knives, even those made from the hardest types of steels. The disadvantage is that you remove quite a lot of material and the results are not sharpest. This is not the same for a ceramic sharpening steel. This is also a rock-solid sharpening material, but the particles are a lot smaller. As such the ceramic sharpening steel won't work as fast, but does leave you with sharper results than a diamond-coated sharpening steel. Do, however, be careful! If you drop a ceramic sharpening steel it will break.

## Sharpen your bread knife

Finally: we believe there are sharpening methods that are better than using a sharpening steel. 'Better' in the sense that they leave you with sharper results. For small maintenance, however, they are perfect. The advantage of using sharpening steels is also that you can sharpen serrated knives such as bread knives. This is not possible with most sharpening stones or (electric) sharpening systems. Do keep in mind that the diameter of your sharpening steel is similar to the size of the serrations.
