### Pohl Force: blade and handle 

Pohl Force often uses D2 for the blades. There are exceptions where 90Cr18MoV steel is used or the knives are made entirely (blade and handle) from D2, but you see the combination of D2 and G10 very often. But D2 is a steel type that retains its sharpness well. It can handle its own and is easy to sharpen. Not surprisingly, it has been a popular steel among knife makers for years. D2 is not completely stainless, so clean and dry it after it comes into contact with moisture or acids. The handle is made from G10, a strong composite material made from glass fibres and synthetic resin.

## Designer Michele 'Molletta' Pensato


Master designer Michele 'Molletta' Pensato designed the B40. Almost all popular LionSteel knives of the past few years were made by Molletta, so it makes sense that he was the one to design this knife as well. He has a particular background. During the day he namely doesn't work in the world of knives, but in banking. Archaeological adventures and hikes make him realize that he needed a good knife. However, because he couldn't find one that suited his needs he designed one himself. LionSteel produced it and a glorious collaboration was born.


A couple of years later Molletta produced LionSteel's most successful designs. The entire M-collection, KUR, TRE, ROK and SR models were all designed by him. He received many Blade Show awards. If you ask us Molletta is the most underexposed top-designer of this generation of knife makers.

Gearmix: gentleman's knives

The T6 is another fantastic knife, coming out of the Lionsteel factory and designed by [Michele "Moletta" Pensato](kato://content/designer_michele_pensato), adding to their already impressive range of survival tools. I’ve really come to love the feel of a [Lionsteel](kato://category/lionsteel), having now owned a number of them over the last few years including the [Bestman](kato://product/LI-BM2-EB), the [B40](kato://content/migrated_topic_489) and [B41](kato://product/LI-B41-BK) models, and the [M5](kato://category/lionsteelm5serie). For all intents and purposes they seem to be getting better and better, constantly improving their factory finish. So when this new survival blade landed on my desk, I was curious to see what they had been up to. And I just so happened to be attending a week long bushcraft course in the east of Finland the next week with Karu Survival. I decided to bring this knife with me, where I would give it a run for its money in less experienced hands, with students attending who maybe had never used an outdoor knife before and see if it could perform and survive the week!

This knife has been in the works for a long time. I first got wind of it a few years ago from Knivesandtools, and you can bet I was excited to get my hands on one. Being a big fan of [LionSteel](kato://category/lionsteel) and their build quality, not to mention the shapes and models that Jesper Voxnaes (Vox) has worked on in the past, I had no doubt that this would be one for my collection. I was right. After almost 2 years of prototypes, alterations and testing, the [MKM Normar](kato://category/mkmnormar) has finally landed on my desk, and it was worth the wait. So let’s get out in the field and see what this tidy-looking tool can do.

Enthusiasts will know who ’Nessmuk’ was and what he meant for modern bushcrafting. Our own bushcrafter Padraig Croke tested the ‘Nessmuk system’ for us with a [Hultafors Ekelund](kato://product/HF841710) axe, [ESEE JG5](kato://product/EE-ESEE-JG5) fixed blade and [LionSteel BestMan](kato://product/LI-BM13-UL) folding knife.


In my [last piece of writing for Knivesandtools](kato://content/migrated_topic_587) I spoke about tool combinations, and choosing the right items for the tasks you may find yourself doing, as well as the type of terrain or woodland you are heading for. This is a topic I personally find fascinating, and I am always interested to see peoples tool combinations, and why they carry what they do. With the seemingly endless array of choices available to us outdoors people today when it comes to tools and brands, the task of finding the right combination that works for you can seem daunting. Survival knife or bushcraft knife? Axe or hatchet? Should I bring a saw?


*The Nessmuk Trio* was a tool combination pioneered by a man named George Washington Sears. Also known as Nessmuk, Sears was a woodsman and early conservationist from the late 1800s, and is regarded, alongside Kephart, as one of the grandfathers of modern bushcraft. His book, entitled *Woodcraft and Camping*, has been in print ever since its publication in 1884, and remains a staple in any book collection. Many, including myself, have poured over his work and attempted to digest and recreate his kit and tools, and today he remains one of the most influential figures in the bushcraft world. Nessmuk believed that his combination of tools (a belt knife, hand axe and pocket knife) could complete any task he needed to accomplish while out in the field. In this article I would like to look at this combination. Not just how it is relevant in today’s outdoor pursuits, but also how we might modify it to suit the types of tasks the modern outdoorsman finds himself working at today.

MKM Knives is one of the most exciting announcements of 2018. A new Italian brand, but still an old acquaintance. The name MIKITA also appears, something we also hadn’t heard of before. What is up with that? What is MKM Knives and why do we look forward to it?


## MKM and MIKITA


The abbreviation MKM stands for Maniago Knife Makers. Each knife enthusiast knows that Maniago is the knife capital of Italy. Perhaps even of the south of Europe. As Germany has Solingen and people in England know Sheffield, everyone knows that the best Italian knives come from Maniago. Literally at the same block at an industrial site in a suburb in this city in the north of Italy you will find all the large names from the Italian knife world. [Fox Knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_378), [LionSteel](kato://content/migrated_pageid_443), [Viper](kato://content/migrated_pageid_486), Mercury and many others.


MIKITA is a cooperation of the last four companies. LionSteel, Viper, Fox and Mercury signed a network agreement in which they state to focus on raising the bar for knife makers in Maniago. They do so under the name of MIKITA: Maniago Innovation Knives Italy. By exchanging knowledge and ideas they are stronger together and increase the quality. 


The brands who joined forces to establish MIKITA now launched a new knife brand: MKM knives. The famous Italian quality Maniago knives are famous for, made by the four cooperating companies. Now you must understand why we are so excited!


## MKM Knives: cooperation with Bob Terzuola and Lucas Burnley


To immediately leave a mark with appealing models made by famous designers MKM decided to cooperate with the two biggest names in the international knife world: Bob Terzuola and Lucas Burnley. Both designers with an impressive track record, and many successful designs on their name.


Bob Terzuola can definitely be called one of the founders and pioneers in the field of the modern pocket knife. After all, he wrote incredibly popular books about quality knives, but more importantly: his designs have been loved for dozens of years. There are very few designers who last that long.


Lucas Burnley is a lot younger than Bob Terzuola, but in just a few years he has made a massive contribution to the knife world. As a designer he is incredibly productive and dozens of his designs are produced by famous brands such as CRKT and Böker, and now also by MKM Knives.

I have had the pleasure writing reviews for Knivesandtools for over two years now. In that time I have experimented with large survival knives like the [Becker BK2](kato://content/migrated_topic_490) and the [ESEE 6](kato://content/migrated_topic_647). I’ve looked at high-end blades such as the [Fällkniven S1X](kato://content/migrated_topic_573) and the [Bark River Bushcrafter](kato://content/migrated_topic_519), and I’ve also used more specialized knives like the [Lionsteel BestMan and the ESEE JG5](kato://content/migrated_topic_626). Some of them I have liked, some I have loved… others I didn’t gel with so well.

After giving all of these knives dirt time and writing for this website for so long, one would wonder how to keep up with creating original ideas and interesting articles for you the reader, without starting to sound like a broken record! The truth is, I believe the tool writes the article; each one as unique in its quirks and character as the next. Steel choices, shapes, hardness, materials and profiles give a blade its character, and my job has simply been to bring to light, in my own words, what my feelings are when interacting with these tools. With such variety and choice out there, I believe there is a perfect knife for everyone. I believe I have found such a knife for my own needs. The LT Wright Gary Wines Bushcrafter is simply my most favourite knives I have ever owned.
