Modestone waterproof notebooks

Modestone makes notebooks you can keep writing in, even when it is pouring. The brand comes from Finland and started with a problem founder Kalle ran into while serving in the Finnish army: his notes became illegible as soon as they got wet. He looked for the answer in the paper itself rather than in a coating. Modestone uses stone paper, which is tear resistant, oil resistant and waterproof.

Why choose Modestone notebooks?

A Modestone pad comes along where ordinary paper gives up: in the rain, in the snow, on board a boat or on a soaked building site. The paper is not coated but water resistant through its full thickness, so a scratch or a worn corner does not suddenly make it vulnerable. Dropped it in a puddle? Wipe the water off and carry on writing. You write on it with a pencil or an all-weather pen. Lost yours? A nail or a key still works, because a metal object leaves a readable line on the paper. The pads are spiral bound along the top, so you flip them over one-handed and keep them flat in your hand while you write. Useful for soldiers, emergency services, hunters, divers and anyone taking notes outdoors.

The range covers spiral-bound pocket pads and squared notebooks in a size that fits a clipboard. Squared paper helps when you write down more than text: coordinates, measurements, a quick sketch or a table. You will find the pads with our waterproof notebooks, next to the other brands we stock. Looking for something to write with? Have a look at pens and notebooks, because you still need a pencil or an all-weather pen. Comparing brands? Rite in the Rain works with coated paper, Modestone with stone paper that needs no coating. That difference mainly shows over time, because a coating can wear off and the material itself cannot.

About Modestone

Modestone is a Finnish brand. While serving in the Finnish army, founder Kalle kept losing his notes to water and went looking for paper that water does nothing to. That turned out to be stone paper: 80% calcium carbonate (limestone) and 20% HDPE. There is no wood fibre in it, and it needs no protective layer to keep water out. The water resistance sits in the material itself and cannot wear off. That also makes the paper oil and tear resistant, and you can write on it without a pen. Since then the brand has mostly made notebooks, in sizes you carry in a chest pocket or a pouch.
