Large wooden chopping boards
Large wooden chopping boards finally give you room to work. You can cut up a whole chicken without pieces of carrot rolling off the edge, and set your chopped vegetables aside while you continue cutting. Large boards are usually thicker and heavier, which means they stay firmly in place while cutting. A large wooden chopping board is at least 40 cm long and 25 cm wide, and comes in beautiful types of wood such as beech wood, acacia wood, oak wood or walnut wood.
Features of a large wooden chopping board
What you get with an extra large wooden chopping board is workspace, and usually weight too. A board that is 3 cm thick or more stays in place when you force your way through a pumpkin, and raises your work surface. That makes cutting more pleasant than on a thin board. If there is a juice groove around the edge, it catches moisture from meat and keeps your worktop clean. Handy if you also use the board to rest meat.
Many large wooden chopping boards are made from end grain. With end grain, the wood fibres stand upright, allowing your blade to sink between the fibres instead of scraping across them. This keeps your knife sharp for longer and makes cut marks less noticeable.
Do consider where you can store the board: a large wooden cutting board will not fit in every cupboard and is more difficult to clean. Rinsing, drying and occasionally oiling are essential for every wooden cutting board. Also see our wooden chopping boards.
